How to configure dedicated and VPS servers with private nameservers

August 5, 2024 / cPanel & WHM

Setting up private nameservers for dedicated and VPS servers is made easier by this guide.

The first step in this process is to get your domain nameservers an IP address.

Crucial guidelines:

  1. In the event that your welcome email does not contain the IP addresses, you may always get in touch with our support team.
  2. After obtaining the IPs, you can proceed to register the nameservers with your domain registrar.
  3. For nameserver help, get in contact with the company that registered your domain name.
  4. Once the nameservers are registered, you have to configure them on the server.

Let us now take these actions:

  1. Open WHM and log in.
  2. Click on the “DNS zone Manager” sub-option after selecting the “DNS function” option.

  3. Decide which “Domain” you want to configure its nameservers for.
  4. Select the “Manage” option.

  5. Your SOA record has to be updated with your primary nameserver and usable email address.
  6. Create “A records” for “ns1.domain.com” and “ns2.domain.com” pointing to the IP addresses you used after registering the nameservers. Select “Save all records” from the menu.
    Save records
  7. If you want to use the newly created personal nameservers for the domain name itself, you must also use them on the side of the domain registrar and in WHM >> DNS Zone Manager >> domain name in question >> NS records and SOA records (use nameservers ns1.yourdomain.com and ns2.yourdomain.com for yourdomain.com).
  8. You may enter your nameservers for all freshly established cPanel accounts (as well as all addons before they are added to cPanel) using the Basic WebHost Manager Setup >> Basic Config option in WHM.

  9. It takes a full day or two for the DNS changes to propagate globally and take effect on your hosting.

That’s it!

Sometimes, you need to restart your dedicated and VPS server after configuring private nameservers for proper performance.  Check out our guide on How to Restart a VPS or Dedicated server using WHM for more guidance on this.
