SSL made simple

An SSL certificate does two important jobs. It helps encrypt traffic between your website and its visitors, and it helps show browsers and users that the connection can be trusted.

That matters for business websites, login areas, checkout pages and any site where visitors expect a secure connection.

WHUK SSL certificates are designed to give you a clear choice between validation levels, practical help with installation and the reassurance of working with a provider you can reach if you need support.

SSL certificate frequently asked questions

What is an SSL certificate?

An SSL certificate helps encrypt the connection between your website and its visitors. It also helps browsers verify that the connection is secure.

Why do I need an SSL certificate?

Without a valid SSL certificate, browsers may warn users that your website is not secure. An SSL certificate helps protect data in transit and gives visitors more confidence in your website.

Do I need an SSL certificate to use HTTPS?

Yes. A valid SSL certificate is needed if you want your website to use HTTPS properly.

What is the difference between domain, organisation and extended validation?

The difference is the level of validation carried out before the certificate is issued. Domain validation is the most straightforward. Organisation validation adds business verification. Extended validation involves the highest level of verification in this range.

What is a wildcard SSL certificate?

A wildcard such as *.example.com covers subdomains including shop.example.com and mail.example.com. It does not automatically cover deeper names such as login.shop.example.com. Our wildcard certificates also cover the main domain, such as example.com.

Do I need a dedicated IP address for an SSL certificate?

Usually not. Most modern browsers support SNI, which means a dedicated IP address is normally not required for SSL.

Do you provide free installation?

Yes. Free installation support is included. If your hosting is elsewhere, free installation is available on hosting accounts that use cPanel or Plesk.

Can an SSL certificate be re-issued?

Yes. If you need your SSL certificate re-issued, our team can help and the certificates include unlimited re-issues.

What is the warranty for?

The warranty is provided by the certificate authority and applies in the very rare event that a certificate is incorrectly issued and this results in fraud or financial loss. It ranges from US$1,000 to US$1,500,000 depending on the certificate: US$1,000 for Alpha SSL, US$10,000 for Domain SSL, US$1,250,000 for Organisation SSL and US$1,500,000 for Extended SSL. It is not general business insurance.

Do you sell SAN or multi-domain certificates?

No. We currently offer single-domain and wildcard certificates. If you need to secure several separate domains, our team can help you understand the available options.

How quickly can an SSL certificate be issued?

Issuance time depends on the certificate type. Domain-validated certificates can usually be issued much more quickly, while organisation and extended validation certificates take longer because additional checks are required.

Why are you selling annual SSL certificates if certificate validity is getting shorter?

Your annual SSL covers you for 12 months, but the certificate may need to be re-issued during that time to stay within the current industry validity rules.

That means you still receive a full year of cover, even though the certificate itself may not remain unchanged for the whole year.

Will I lose cover part way through the year?

No. If you buy an annual SSL certificate, you remain covered for the full 12-month term. The certificate may need to be re-issued during that period so your website stays protected within the current validity limits.

Will shorter certificate validity mean more admin for me?

It can mean certificates need to be re-issued more often than before. If you need help, our team can explain what is required and help you manage the process more smoothly.

Can you help me choose the right SSL certificate?

Yes. If you are not sure which certificate is right for your website, our team can help you compare the options and choose the right one.
