Dedicated Server Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a dedicated server and a VPS?

A VPS gives you allocated resources within a virtual server that runs alongside other virtual servers on shared physical hardware. A dedicated server gives you the whole physical server, with its processor, memory and storage reserved for your use. It can be a good fit for demanding applications or workloads that need hardware isolation and more control over the server environment. Our team can help you choose.

Are dedicated servers hosted in the UK?

Yes. All dedicated servers are hosted in our professionally managed UK data centres, with resilient power, cooling and network connectivity. Your data and backups stay within the UK.

Can I use a dedicated server for Windows-based applications such as .NET or MSSQL?

Yes. You can deploy Windows Server with full administrator access and run Windows-based applications and frameworks such as .NET and MSSQL. Tell us about your requirements and we will help you choose the right configuration.

Do I get full root or administrator access?

Yes. You get full root access on Linux or administrator access on Windows Server, with complete control over your operating system and software environment.

Can I upgrade the server later?

Yes. You can upgrade RAM, storage, networking and additional services as your requirements grow. If you need a different configuration entirely, our team can help you plan the right next step.

Can you help with more advanced infrastructure requirements?

Yes. For more advanced environments we can help design setups involving virtualisation platforms, high-availability designs, replication, load balancing and geo-redundancy. Speak to our team about a bespoke setup.

What does your Server Management Agreement cover?

With a supported cPanel or Plesk configuration, our management covers the infrastructure, physical hardware, operating system, control panel and supported software we install. This includes proactive monitoring, critical security patching and help with supported setup, hardening, optimisation and troubleshooting. Your websites, applications, content and unsupported software remain your responsibility.

Do you offer support beyond the base server?

Yes. Choose cPanel or Plesk for our standard managed service, or talk to our enterprise team about a paid agreement tailored to a more complex environment. If you choose no control panel or opt out of management, the server is self-managed: we continue to support the infrastructure and physical hardware while you manage the operating system and software.

Can you help me move from another provider?

Yes, and migration is included at no additional cost. Our UK-based team can review your current setup, explain the likely approach and help plan the migration so your services move across with minimal disruption.

Are dedicated servers suitable for business-critical workloads?

Yes. Dedicated servers are built for high-traffic platforms, data-intensive applications and business-critical workloads, with full hardware isolation, enterprise-grade hardware and real UK-based support.

What support is available with dedicated servers?

Support is available 24/7 by phone, live chat and ticket. On a managed cPanel or Plesk server, our engineers can help with the supported server environment. On a self-managed server, support covers our infrastructure and the physical server hardware.

Is backup included with dedicated servers?

Backup isn’t included as standard, but you can add Acronis Backup to your dedicated server for an additional charge. Your backups are stored off-site in a UK datacentre, separate from your live server. You can recover individual files, set a backup schedule and choose how long to keep your backups. You’re welcome to manage this yourself, or ask our team for help with setup and recovery.

Why would I choose Acronis Backup on a dedicated server?

Acronis Backup gives you a separate copy of your data to recover from if files are accidentally deleted, damaged or affected by an incident. You can choose a backup schedule and retention period that suit your business. Backup data is encrypted while being transferred, and you can also enable encryption for stored backups. Immutable storage helps protect backup copies from being changed or deleted during their retention period, including in the event of a ransomware incident.
