What is an SSL certificate? Why do I need one?
An SSL certificate verifies that the connection between your site, email or application and the user is secure. This is used to assure the user that the connection is to you and that it is secure and encrypted. This is essential for sites that need to carry out secure operations, such as financial transactions or the sending and receiving of confidential correspondence.
Do I need to buy an SSL certificate to use HTTPS?
Yes. If a visitor attempts to access your website using an HTTPS connection and you do not have a valid SSL certificate, their web browser will display a warning advising that the website is unsafe. Without an SSL certificate, the browser has no way of verifying that it is securely communicating with the actual server that hosts your website and not a malicious third party.
While free domain-level SSL certificates are available, they do not offer the same levels of verification as organisation or extended SSL certificates, nor do they offer the financial protection that comes with all the GlobalSign SSL certificates available from WHUK.
What is an SSL wildcard certificate?
An SSL wildcard offers the same protection as a standard certificate but with the additional benefit that it also secures an unlimited number of subdomains. (Subdomains of example.com, for instance, could include forum.example.com and billing.example.com.) An SSL wildcard certificate is often a more cost-effective solution than buying separate certificates for the domain and each subdomain.
Do I need a Dedicated IP with my SSL cert?
Probably not. All modern browsers use a system called SNI (Server Name Indication), with less than 1% of users in the world using a browser that does not support SNI in 2015.
What is the warranty for? How does it work?
All of our SSL certificates come with an issuance warranty, which is underwritten by the Certification Authority. This warranty is an indemnity in the very rare event a certificate is incorrectly issued by the Certification Authority that results in fraud or other financial loss to you or your customers. Please note, this is not business insurance. See the Warranty Policy for more info.
What is an extended SSL? Why would I need it?
Extended SSLs are subject to a thorough review process which includes the verification of your organisation’s legal status and identity. This provides the highest level of verification for both users and browsers. Extended SSL warranties also provide the greatest levels of financial protection.
