Step 1 : Download A Magento Theme

There is a wide range of Magento themes available online; you can easily search and download the one you like. You will find a lot of free templates and in some cases the designers who have created some specific themes will be charged. Whichever theme you select, you will get a file that is in .zip format. Download it to your PC and unzip it.

Step 2 : Upload A Theme

Note: Some of the themes might include a /js folder as well.

Connect to your web host via FTP and upload these folders to the root of your website.

Step 3 : Activate The Theme

Login to your Magento admin panel and select System -> Configuration. You will find this option in the drop-down menu present at the top of the page. After that click on “Design”, from the menu present on the left hand side. Now click on the “Themes” header in order to expand the section.

You will see 5 fields:

  • Translations
  • Templates
  • Skin (Images / CSS)
  • Layout
  • Default

This is the place where you will have to add your theme name. The “Translations” field is usually kept blank unless you are using the alternate language. For instance, if you download a style named Blue, enter “blue” into the Templates, Skin, Layout and Default fields and then click on Save Config. The name that you are entering into each field and the actual name of the field will differ depending on the name that you choose. Some themes comprise of multiple colors so all the fields might not have the same name.

The process of adding the theme is completed. You can go to the main page of your online store and admire your new theme!
