  • Is website less likely to get hacked on a dedicated or VPS server?

The question isn't related to webhosting uk servers. this is a general query that I have been wondering on for a while. Is website less likely to get hacked on a dedicated or VPS server? you share the server with others on shared server. What is risk involved with this?

It depends who is managing the server. Generally shared servers are kept up to date. With vps and dedicated servers if you have your host manage the servers then you can prevent the server from being exploited.

I think yes. it is less likely to get hacked on a dedicated server. Having a VPS or Dedicated server, the updates are much more in your hands. So you can keep all softwares and applications up to date.

In the past I have come across with companies that do not do anything to their shared servers, they set them fill these with users and just leave them. Even if there are patches to apply they won't bother checking these servers.

If you are not that familiar with administrating a server go for a managed server. After all a poorly managed server can be just as insecure as anything else. It is better to have your web host manage the server.

It's always recommended to go with managed hosting service provider who have depth knowledge of Server Management and Security issues.
Managed Webhosting provider takes care of server security, upgrading security patches and general maintenance hence you have secure hosting environment and your data is safe, no matter which hosting solution you opt for !!!

In general, it is also very important to keep your applications up to date. The unstable versions are more prone to hacking. Using old versions of scripts and applications isn't recommended no matter what server you use for hosting, these can be exploited anytime.

Yes. If you think that you are having the right knowledge for managing a server yourself, then VPS or dedicated is better choice.

Yes I am not a system administrator so I would get the managed server so the host can keep the server updated for me. Shared Hosting is not that bad idea though, users still prefer using shared.

I have seen that most of hacks take place because of holes in web application people use. Once they have installed the application they are not bothered to update the script even when they see a notification to do that.

It is important to regularly take backups of your website, you can always have the data if in case the website is hacked.

Besides keeping data backups you should make sure you use strong passwords. Most hacks take place due to holes in applications and easy to crack passwords.

Personally, I think the type of hosting plan won't matter when it comes to security. A managed host generally keeps everything up to date on the server. It is important to keep your scripts up to date. Backups are a very important part no matter what scripts you run or no matter what type of website you have.
