Which is better for a small-medium eCommerce business website: WordPress or Joomla?

Well, both CMS's are equally good. But, it primary comes down to how comfortable and experienced you are with using them. WordPress can be a good choice if your knowledge and experience with managing a CMS is limited whereas, if you have a hands on experience with managing Joomla, then that would be a better choice.

On a broader level, you can achieve a more better efficiency and security with Joomla - provided you have the needed expertise or an experienced developer who understands the key ingredients of a secure site.

Basically WordPress is not an eCommerce platform by default. It’s all depends upon your requirement. But you can use some free and paid plugins for shopping cart integration in WordPress CMS. Other most popular shopping cart platforms are available for your eCommerce business such as OSCommerce, zencart etc.
