  • Multimedia and VPS

Can you host a multimedia website on a VPS package? More specifically a video web site. Or would you have to switch over and go with a dedicated server for that?

    Hey

I have seen a lot of people ask this question. A multimedia site will work just fine on a VPS. In fact, VPS and Dedicated servers are your only two options. Which one you use depends on the size of your website.

      My opinion

I think it is better to start off with a VPS hosting account, you can then upgrade that to a dedicated server when ever you are ready. For the most part that is a pretty easy upgrade to make. But with the VPS you can start to get an Idea of what is going on.

Try using a Semi Dedicated Server Hosting | Managed UK Semi Dedicated Server Solutions instead and later you can upgrade to a dedicated server.

Hehe, I think sometimes people forget there are such things as Semi-Dedicated servers. Or maybe they just consider them to be the step between VPS web hosting and Dedicated hosting, but half a step so you don't count it.

Personally, I'll advice you to start with a dedicated server rather then investing in VPS and then upgrading to a server. Video files are resource hog and requires lot of server resources since VPS is virtual server you may not get best performance or your account may overlaod server node and your webhost may suspend your VPS.
So it's better to start with better hosting rather then migrating later !!!
PS : even VPS are better for low traffic media website but not recommended.

You do make a good point there. I guess it just depends on the size of the multimedia website. I suppose if you were still unsure about a dedicated server then you would at least wan't to go with a semi dedicated, like someone else recommended.

I think Semi-dedicated will be the best option for you. It will be good to start with it if you're not ready for a dedicated server now. And as you might be aware you can upgrade to a dedicated server anytime..
