SIP or Session Initiation Protocol, is a technique for achieving a VoIP Call. This is an application layer protocol for setting up real-time sessions of audio and video between two phones. A SIP trunk represents a virtual session of an analog telephone. With SIP trunking, the SIP provider can connect with many channels over the PBX, allowing the user to make local and long-distance locals using the Internet.

A SIP trunk establishes a direct connection between an ITSP and your organization. It helps in extending the VoIP telephony beyond the firewall of the organization not even needing an IP-PSTN gateway. Moreover, SIP trunks can carry multimedia conferences, instant messages, user presence information, Enhanced 9-1-1 (E9-1-1) emergency calls as well as other real-time communications services.
