SIP or Session Initiation Protocol, is a technique for achieving a VoIP Call. This is an application layer protocol for setting up real-time sessions of audio and video between two phones. A SIP trunk represents a virtual session of an analog telephone. With SIP trunking, the SIP provider can connect with many channels over the PBX, allowing the user to make local and long-distance locals using the Internet.

A SIP trunk establishes a direct connection between an ITSP and your organization. It helps in extending the VoIP telephony beyond the firewall of the organization not even needing an IP-PSTN gateway. Moreover, SIP trunks can carry multimedia conferences, instant messages, user presence information, Enhanced 9-1-1 (E9-1-1) emergency calls as well as other real-time communications services.

SIP trunking is a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and streaming media service based on the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) by which Internet telephony service providers (ITSPs) deliver telephone services and unified communications to customers equipped with SIP-based private branch exchange (IP-PBX).
