How to download big file in Linux?

Can I download big file, without using full network bandwidth.
Is there any way to limit the download speed in Linux?

I don't know whether such kind of selection offered in Linux or not, However, one thing I would like to suggest, if you limit the download speed anyhow, then it will take more time to download entire file and it may consume same or more bandwidth.

Linux has wget command to download the files to the server.
You may use option "wget --limit -rate=400K" to limit to the download speed to 400k.

Can I put this download in background?

Here is the command which can put the download in background
"wget -b"
and use wget-log to check the status of download.

Follow the syntax : wget -bqc http://path-to-url/linux.iso

A PID on screen will appear : Continuing in background, pid 12345.

-b : Immediately after startup, go to background. If at all no output file is signified through the -o, output is redirected to wget-log.
-q : Switch off wget’s output for saving some disk space
-c : Resume download which is broken i.e. continue receiving a partially-downloaded file. This is helpful when one wants to finish up a download initiated by a previous instance of wget, or else by another program.
