When you optimize your website/blog hosted on a sub domain (say coolblog.wordpress.com) for search engines, will it also help the main domain to get better ranked and listed on the search engines?

I agree with that. In that case you intentionally optimize your main domain by using the sub domain to link back to the main domain. What if you optimize the subdomain and build links to it without bothering about the main domain? Will the main domain still get benefited from the SEO effort?

Hello,
Subdomains can be very useful for SEO, Search Engines treat the subdomains as a seperate domain name upto some extent. Hence the page rank, link popularity, authority, etc of your primary domain will not necessarily be transferred to the subdomain. The care shall be taken that content in a subdomain is largely unique, duplicate content filtering can kick in and will cause problem for the main domain as well as the subdomain.
Regards,
Ken.
