  • Optimizing sub domains

When you optimize your website/blog hosted on a sub domain (say coolblog.wordpress.com) for search engines, will it also help the main domain to get better ranked and listed on the search engines?

If you link back your sub-domain to your main domain it will surely boost ranking of your main domain. Usually webmaster prefer to have a blog or a forum as a sub-domain which is pointed back to main domain to pass link juice and other benefits !

I agree with that. In that case you intentionally optimize your main domain by using the sub domain to link back to the main domain. What if you optimize the subdomain and build links to it without bothering about the main domain? Will the main domain still get benefited from the SEO effort?

If you update your blog consistently, back links to your main site and it's interior web pages will always perform much better in the search engines.

This seems to be useful for sub domain, but you can optimize your sub domain like main domain - Building backlinks for your site.

Well, some of the link juice of the subdomains will benefit the main domain and make a difference in it's rankings, however, the benefit of optimizing the main domain first is more than optimizing the subdomains first

                Hello,

Subdomains can be very useful for SEO, Search Engines treat the subdomains as a seperate domain name upto some extent. Hence the page rank, link popularity, authority, etc of your primary domain will not necessarily be transferred to the subdomain. The care shall be taken that content in a subdomain is largely unique, duplicate content filtering can kick in and will cause problem for the main domain as well as the subdomain.

                Regards,
                Ken.
