I am surprised to not see a thread about Alexa in here. So I thought that I would be the first one to post about it. Lets start with the basics. How does Alexa work, who should use Alexa, why is Alexa so popular?

As per my knowledge Alexa is one of the most important organisation in the Industry while it's one of the most trusted companies online.

* Alexa starts showing ranking graph when you get into the top 100k sites
* If the website is in top 100k only those sites are there which is an achievement.
* Alexa also shows top 25k, 100k etc. site lists. and these lists are free to download.

The Alexa is decreased at a high speed, if your website is often browsed by people who have Alexa Toolbar installed. There are hundreds of Blogs or websites with poor Alexa rankings and still getting around 8K visits a month.

Alexa is great, but I wish they would tell us the algorithm. I think some people really spend time looking at sites ranked well with Alexa and use the "do what they do tactic". How come places like Alexa do not come right out and tell you what it is?

This is great, so much helpful information here. How about crawling, can you get Alexa to crawl your website, and how do you get Alexa to crawl your website?

You have to send them a request. I think if you go to the FAQ for Alexa you will see a link listed under one of the questions. I do not remember which one though.
