  • Advantages of VPS over Shared or Dedicated server.

    Hi there,

Can someone please help me with some advantages of VPS over Shared or a dedicated server?

    Thanks,
    Dave

With shared hosting account you get access to the control panel and you have to manage all your accounts through web based control panel. You are not able to install third party applications due to limited access. VPS gives you more control over the server, you get dedicated resources and root ssh to the server. You can install third party applications on the VPS. VPS performs exactly like a stand alone dedicated server and it's available at a lower cost as well. On VPS you don't have the limitations of shared hosting, you get the performance of a dedicated server and that too at a lower cost.

      Hi Dave,

VPS are Virtual Private Servers. VPS appears like a dedicated server to the end user. VPSs are allocated a certain amount of CPU, RAM / memory, storage space and monthly bandwidth within their own partition or part of the server. These resources are not shared, every individual is allotted a chunk of dedicated server resources for their own usage. You also have an option to choose a control panel you can either opt for the cPanel / WHM or Plesk as per your requirement.

VPS is a perfect choice if you are planning to upgrade from a shared hosting account. Upgrade from shared server to VPS is a seamless procedure, where migration is taken care by the technical team; provided the control panel is same at both ends. The VPS can also be upgraded at any point of time by just paying the difference amount between the two plans.

With VPS, users get more privileges than a shared hosting account. A VPS functions just like a dedicated server wherein you can enjoy all the privileges similar to a dedicated server with full root / RDP access to the server. This enables users to install any application / software of choice. You can host unlimited domains, sub domains and there are no limitations on email accounts or database either.

Please feel free to post if you need more information on this.

      Cheers!!!

If your website has outgrown the shared server and you need to upgrade to your own server, a VPS is what you could use instead of investing in a dedicated server. It has almost all the features of the dedicated server. The best part is the root access that you get with the VPS. On a shared plan you don't get the control to the server to install the applications you need like in VPS and dedicated servers.

VPS is the stepping stone between shared and dedicated server. If you need more resources which your shared server cannot provide then you would need to upgrade. But it is not possible for everyone to afford a dedicated server. A VPS would give you the necessary resources and performance of a dedicated server but without paying so much. You get the resources at a good price which makes a VPS the better choice.

After VPS, you also have an option of Cloud Hosting which are recently in a great demand. They are reliable/scalable and cost effective if you don't want to invest in a dedicated server but still want more freedom and flexibility which can cope with your website popularity.

                Cloud Hosting Vs VPS

There's a similarity between a VPS and a Cloud solution. Both are based on virtualization technology and makes use of a hypervisor. Despite this, a cloud can offer some significant benefits incomparison to a VPS. Following are the key benefits when comparing Cloud with traditional Virtual Private Server (VPS).
                • Near unlimited resources.
                • VM instance over multiple servers in a cluster.
                • Enhanced redundancy
                • Centralized redundant storage

One reason why the cloud hosting platform is works great for large business setups is because it consists of a cluster of servers. This framework makes sure that the load on the server is always balanced and there adequate resources are provided. As a result, the possibilities of downtime are reduced and higher efficiency can be maintained.

The Cloud server enhances the performance as they are setup on the Cluster and are more scalable than the VPS servers. You always have an opportunity for seamless upgrade without any sought of downtime.

Yup, that's when the Cloud is based on the scaling model. Different cloud service providers may set-up cloud infrastructure differently, few may offer an auto-scaling feature while others would have a fixed resource model. Though in the end the infrastructure is still over a cluster of dedicates servers connected within the same network i.e. Cloud and uses a hardware hypervisor.

Also, in terms of security a cloud infrastructure is much better than a VPS or a Dedicated Server. Usually, a lot of people think that security is the main reason for businesses for not using the cloud services. However, this is a big misconception people have regarding the cloud security. In fact, cloud services provider are more prepared for data security in the cloud as they usually creates various policies for different things. These cloud infrastructure is operated by experienced IT experts and generally have a dedicated team of experts to manage the IT security.

Security in the cloud is quite high compared to other services. Various types of encryption and security methods make it very secure. So it is only a misconception that data in the cloud is not safe.

Its a fact that the bridge of the cloud security has already been crossed a long time ago, which people don't understand and are still afraid of the cloud. The main problem is not with the cloud security, but the issue is with the knowledge and training we provide users and ask them utilized it. Its an important factor which can be directly controlled by every individual and organization. It would be more beneficial and profitable for your business, if you learn how to use the cloud more quickly and correctly.

Its not that people shouldn't worry about security, they should. However, it is also true that like other systems or solutions, the cloud is secure as well. In fact, in some cases, it is better to store your data in the cloud rather than storing it on your personal laptops or compact devices. Today, millions of users worldwide are using the online banks for transactions, using ebay, travels sites and amazon to store their information in the cloud and access it. Not only these sites, but also sites like Apple iCloud, Gmail are used to store various files and documents, which is nothing but, a cloud-based service. In addition to these, there are many such corporations that are utilizing the cloud-based "Salesforce.com" software and services to backup their business data.
