There is no connection between the OS you select for a hosting plan and the OS you are running on your machine. You can still use a linux plan

No.. not required, Server OS has nothing to do with what OS you use on your local machine !
Just check if your webhost provides you managed hosting services so that you have helping hand in case you got stuck with some tech issue...

Do you think a BASIC cPanel shared hosting plan can accommodate my needs. What if I use more resources within some month. So in that case what will happen. I need to make sure that my website does not get affected if I use more resources as there should be some option for this. So can you let me know a solution for this ?

You can start with a BASIC Linux Shared hosting plan for now and later on upgrade to a higher hosting plan, as upgrades can be made at any point of time. You will receive a mail from us as soon your bandwidth Strikes 80 % mark, so you can upgrade your hosting plan to a higher one which has more resources allotted to it.

I have seen few URLs with https://, I assume it is something related to SSL. Is it possible to have https://www.mail.mydomain.com ? Also, does it make difference if it is https://www.mydomain.com and https://mydomain.com?

When you install a SSL on your domain name, the url turns to https://www.mail.mydomain.com from http://www.mail.mydomain.com. This will show that you have secured your domain name to have safe payment transactions via your website, so that customers can easily purchase products from your website.

If you are serious business owner and sell products online then i will advice you to go with Dedicated SSL rather then shared.

If you are trying to save few bucks using Shared SSL, then your domain URL may look unprofessional something like this: https://secure.yourhost.com/~username/
whereas using a dedicated ssl certificate you have a private secure url such as https://secure.yourname.com/

I do not find shared ssl of any use... Private SSL is secure. It also gives your customers a confidence that the website will carry secure transactions.

Yes, if you are going to have online transactions via your website, then you will need to have a Dedicated SSL certificate, shared SSL will be of no use. A Dedicated SSL is recommended to have safe and secure Payment tracsactions.
