    What is a subnet mask?

  • #2
Using subnetting, data can be routed more efficiently and securely by dividing a network into smaller networks (subnets). In the absence of a subnet mask, IP addresses are identical to network addresses.A subnet mask is used to divide an IP address into two parts.

One part classifies the host (computer), and the other portion classifies the network to which it fits.

The 3 default subnet masks are as follows:

        a) 255.0. 0.0 for Class A.

        b) 255.255. 0.0 for class B.

        c) 255.255. 255.0 for Class C.

Except for your router blips, two devices must never get the same IP address.
