  • How to Convert a cPanel & WHM Server into a cPanel DNSONLY Server

    Overview

This document describes the steps to run cPanel DNSONLY software on an existing cPanel & WHM server. cPanel DNSONLY software allows you to run a dedicated physical nameserver. It is the "bare-bones" version of cPanel & WHM, and only replicate DNS zones to your other servers.

    Important:

1.We strongly recommend that you install the cPanel DNSONLY software as a fresh installation on your server. For more information, read our Installation Guide Install cPanel DNSONLY documentation.

2.This process will not remove any existing cPanel & WHM files that are not a part of the cPanel DNSONLY product.

3.cPanel DNSONLY is a free product and, as such, does not require a license.

    Use DNSONLY

To use cPanel DNSONLY on your existing cPanel & WHM server, perform the following steps:

1.On the server that you wish to convert, run the following command: touch /var/cpanel/dnsonly

    2.
To complete the update and restart your server's cpsrvd daemon, run the following command: /scripts/upcp

Your server will update to cPanel DNSONLY.

    Return to cPanel & WHM

    Important:

These steps will only work properly if the server originally used cPanel & WHM and you used the method above to convert it to cPanel DNSONLY.

To return to cPanel & WHM, perform the following steps:

1.To remove the DNSONLY touch file, run the following command: rm -f /var/cpanel/dnsonly

2.To complete the update and restart your server's cpsrvd daemon, run the following command: /scripts/upcp

Your server will return to the use of the full cPanel & WHM product.
