I personally liked the two themes, but I guess its not official Google sites,am I correct.
I basically liked it due to its appearance but at the same time it is also saving electricity, hence by using it we can add a lot to the environment.
White designs are known to be better for reading. People just don't find it too comfortable with light texts on dark backgrounds. But dark designs save more energy, especially considering a popular site like Google.
Early versions of Safari on Windows came with a dark theme as a default and Microsoft also used one in a lot of their web development tools.
The theme is a marketing tool, Safari (Apple) to look different from Windows, and Microsoft to make their web tools look different from their existing development environment.
As a person who grew up on white screen vdus, those that came out after punched cards but before orange/green VDUs (ADM did a blue VDU for a while) I like them.
It amuses many of my colleagues that I configure apps such as DevStudio to work with black background and green text.

Black and Green and 80*25 text only rules!
Remember Uniplex on Unix, WordStar on CPM or BOS Writer on BOS (surprise, surprise), they supported multiple fonts on a text only screens and people didn't waste time on irrelevant formatting they just wrote a letter?
We don't need themes, modern IT is wasting too much time and computing power on presentation over substance.
When I started work I squinted at 80*25 on a 10inch screen, so a 19inch screen could support a bit more, I suppose, maybe, if we have to have some progress, say 132 * 40.
