What is SMF?

October 18, 2006 / Control Panels Web Hosting

SMF stands for Simple Machines Forum. It is a free, professional grade software package that allows you to set up your own online community within minutes.

Its powerful custom made template engine puts you in full control of the lay-out of your message board and with our unique SSI or Server Side Includes function you can let your forum and your website interact with each other. SMF is written in the popular language PHP and uses a MySQL database. It is designed to provide you with all the features you need from a bulletin board while having an absolute minimal impact on the resources of the server.

SMF is the next generation of forum software, and best of all it is and will always remain completely free. It also has news feeds ie ATOM, RDF (both only in 1.1), RSS, RSS2 and XML formats (available in both versions) that your users can subscribe to with their favorite newsreader or include on various search engines’ personal pages.

Visit the WHUK website for more news, knowledge base articles, blog posts and information on our wide range of hosting services.

  1. SMF is indeed a good forum software and steadily gaining popularity. The best part is it is available free. So if you cannot afford vBulletin, do not wish to use phpBB, SMF is you answer. SMF has more features than phpBB but the best of all features is the Package Manager that automatically installs or uninstalls mods.
