.UK Domains for £1 – Celebrating 1 Year of .UK

Each year the Internet gets bigger and bigger, and at the end of 2012 it is thought that more than 252 million domains have been registered worldwide.

And out of those 252 million, many will be UK domains: the .uk domain is ranked as the fourth most popular TLD (Top Level Domain) in the world, and the second most popular ccTLD (country code Top Level Domain), beaten to first spot by the .de ccTLD for Germany.

World’s fourth most popular

To make our country’s TLD even more popular, Nominet, the UK’s domain management body, opened up the namespace on 10th June 2014 so webmasters could for the first time register names directly under the .uk ccTLD as opposed to using the sub-ccTLDs, such as .co.uk and .org.uk. This introduction has been a huge success, with over 330,000 new domains registered in the first year.
