How to configure VirtueMart to work with SSL?

VirtueMart is an open source e-commerce solution designed as a extension of the Mambo or Joomla (CMS). VirtueMart uses PHP code and MySQL database, so Linux based hosting plans are preferred for hosting such sites. VirtueMart cannot be installed alone, it needs a Plug-in and requires the PHP Content Management System Joomla(or Mambo). So you must install Joomla first, then VirtueMart.

System requirements are as follows :-

PHP 4.2.x or above  recommended
MySQL 3.23.x or above recommended
Apache 1.13.19 or above recommended

Its General Features are :-

> Capable of using a SSL (https) Encryption (128-bit).
> Shoppers can manage their User Accounts (registration required)
> Shipping Address Management (Customers can enter their own Shipping Addresses)
> Order History: Shopper can view all their previous Orders (and Order Details)
> Order Confirmation Mail (customizable!) is sent to Shopper and Store Owner
> Flexible Tax Models
* Model 1: ShipTo Address-based Tax Calculation.
* Model 2: Store Address-based Tax Calculation.
* Model 3: EU Mode (Store Owner based Tax Calculation when Customer comes from an EU Country).
> Multiple Currencies (you can allow Customers to change the Currency and buy using an alternative Currency)
Multiple Languages (using the Joomla! Component Joom!Fish or Nooku).

Administration Features :-

> Multiple Images and Files (like Spec Sheets and Flyers) per Product
> Product Attributes (like Size or Color) can be added to Product

Payment Modules :-

VirtueMart can use both a private SSL certificate and a shared SSL certificate. Please refer the guidelines below about how to configure it on the SSL certificate

VirtueMart on a Private SSL :-

1. Log in your VirtueMart site using administrator’s username and password
2. Enter the VirtueMart admin area by clicking on Admin link in the left menu
3. Click on Adminlink in the top menu of the admin area and choose Configuration from the drop down menu
4. Click Path & URL tab
5. Change the SECURE URL setting from http://yourdomain.com to https://yourdomain.com

VirtueMart on a Shared SSL

1. Log in your VirtueMart site with the administrator’s username and password
2. Enter the VirtueMart admin area by clicking on Admin link in the left menu
3. Click on Adminlink in the top menu of the admin area and choose Configuration from the drop down menu
4. Click Path & URL tab
5. Change the SECURE URL setting from http://yourdomain.com to https://serverip/~user, where the server IP is the IP of your host server and the user is the username you use to login to your cPanel.

You just need to make sure that Shared SSL will result in warning pop-ups for the people checking out through your VirtueMart.
