In Leech protect, the default time set is 2 hours. So you can define the maximum number of login’s for users in 2 hours. This is a kind of security feature which can be used for your domains.

How to setup Leech protect for a domain name

1) Assuming that you are logged into your cPanel. You will see a option of “Leech Protect” in “Security” section.

2) When you click on “Leech Protect”, you will get a new window. You can select a domain/ sub-domain which you have added previously in your cPanel.

3) When you click on “OK” button, you will get a new windows where you can select a particular folder which you wish to protect.

4) Once you click on a particular directory, you will get a new window where you can set the required permissions.

Here you can set the number of login attempts which can be made in 2 hours, so the user cannot login more than the limit allotted by you. You can even redirect the users to a different url if they are about to exceed the maximum number of login attempts. You just need to enter a url in that box. You can even send a email alert or a notification to that users email address. You can even suspend the users who are about to exceed the maximum number of login attempts. To reactivate their accounts, you just need to reset their passwords. After filling all the necessary details, you can secure a particular domain name.

If you wish to de-activate or disable Leech Protect, you just need to login into your cPanel, follow the same steps and then click on “Disable Protection”, so that Leech Protect will be disabled.

As Zamfoo is a licensed application, you will have to purchase the license from their website and obtain the license key. Once you get the license key, you can start with the installation. Firstly you need to login into your server via SSH. After that you will have to fire the following commands via SSH.

cd/
This will take you to the root directory of your server.

wget http://www.zamfoo.com/downloads/zamfoo_installer.tar
This command will download zafoo on your server.

tar -xvf zamfoo_installer.tar
This command will extract contents on the server.

chmod 755 runme.cgi
This command will modify the permissions to make it executable.

./runme.cgi
This command will run the installer.

After firing all these commands, it will ask you for a License key. You will have to enter the license key here:- $license=”License key”. Once you enter the License key, press CTRL + X and then Save it.

In this way Zamfoo will be installed on your server.

You can add wizard => click add to add the IP filter => click next => check the check box mirrored, match packets with exact opposite source and destination address.  Select the source address as My IP Address  and add the destination address as a specific IP address(The IP address which you want to block on any of your hosting server, Any IP address(Will block all the IP addresses) , a subnet of IP. Address or a DNS name => Click next => Select protocol Type as Any and finish the IP filter wizard .

Now as you  select the IP filter which you have set and click the next for the filter action =>check the checkbox use add wizard => Click add => Click next and type the filter action name and Description => Click next => Select the ‘BLOCK’ action and click next => Click finish. Now select the filter action and click next and finish and click ok. To apply the policy right click on the policy Name and select Assign.

Now if you want to block a particular port such as 1433 which is MSSQL Port or any other port such as 21 (FTP) , 23(Telnet) , 3389(RDP) ,110 (POP3) please follow the steps described below.

Right click IP security policy which you have created from the above steps =>click properties => Select the IP security policy and click edit => Under the IP Filter list tab select IP filter => Edit => Add a new Filter =>Click next =>

Check the check box mirrored , Match packets with the exact opposite source and destination addresses Click next and type source address as My IP address as well as destination address as any IP address or a specific IP address or a specific subnet you can  go to next step => select a protocol type as TCP => select from this port and type the port number which you want to block and then select to any port => click next => Click Finish . You are done with all the procedure .

netstat -anp |grep ‘tcp\|udp’ | awk ‘{print $5}’ | cut -d: -f1 | sort | uniq -c | sort -n

This command will show you the list of IP’s which have logged in is maximum number of connections to your server.

You should also remember that ddos becomes more complex as attackers are using fewer connections with more number of attacking IP’s. In such cases, you will get less number of connections even when your server is under ddos.
One important thing that you should check is the number of active connections that your server currently has.

netstat -n | grep :80 |wc -l

The above command will show the active connections that are open to your server.

netstat -n | grep :80 | grep SYN |wc -l

There are many attackers present who typically start attack by starting a connection to the server and then do not send a reply making the server wait till it times out. Result of active connections from the first command will vary but if it shows connections  more than 500, then you will be definitely having problems. If the result after you fire second command is 100 or above then you are having problems with sync attack.

You can even block a particular IP on your server. If you wish to block a particular IP on the server, you can use the following command

route add ipaddress reject

Here is one example of how to block a particular IP on the server
for example:

route add 115.98.0.55 reject

Once you block a paricular IP on the server, you can even crosscheck if the IP is blocked or not by using the following command.

route -n |grep IPaddress

You can also block a IP with iptables on the server by using the following command.

iptables -A INPUT 1 -s IPADRESS -j DROP/REJECT
service iptables restart
service iptables save

After firing the above command, KILL all httpd connection and than restart httpd service by using following command:

killall -KILL httpd
service httpd startssl
