This process describes how to override the default user list page layout while using phptemplate based themes and the profile.module. You will see the user list page when you go to any web address followed by ‘profile’ for example -
www.example.com/profile
.

With the use of this override it is possible for you to control the profile fields that are displayed and you can also control their positioning/layout.

Step 1

Open a text editor like notepad.exe, create a file named template.php with the use of the following snippet. If you already have a template.php file, just add it to your existing one.

Make sure to upload the template.php file to your active theme folder.

Step 2

The template.php snippet catches the default user list page layout before it is displayed and it also looks in the same folder for profile_profile.tpl.php file that determines the new layout.

A very simple example of a
profile_profile.tpl.php
file maybe illustrated as follows

Here the custom extended fields that are setup are called profile_city, profile_country, profile_postcode

Upload your profile_profile.tpl.php file to your active theme folder and go to your user list page at
www.example.com/profile
to view the new layout.

Once the process is complete, you can perform the following functions:

Name the classes or change the layout according to your preference.

Edit your style.css file or whatever your main style sheet is called in order to control the class styles

Drupal is one of the most efficient content management systems that also increases the efficiency of Drupal Hosting UK. Drupal is used by many webmasters, however in most of the case the webmasters are not aware of the process of taking the backup or restoring a Drupal website. The process that needs to be followed in order to take the backup or restore a Drupal website is mentioned below.

Generating the latest backup files is essential in the following scanarios:

Scenario 1 : When the users upgrade their plan to higher edition, it is recommend to have a backup of the database and other files. In case you encounter any issue during the upgradation process, there are possibilities of loosing the data, therefore it is extremely important to have a backup to protect all the data.
Scenario 2 : Incase if there is any issue in the current server that warrants you to change the hosting provider; in this case it is advisable to have your own backup. When you change the hosting provider, all you have to do is upload the backup file and proceed with the hosting activities. Drupal Hosting UK provides with the perfect platform to manage the hosting activities along with website creation and content management.
Scenario 3 : There is also a possibility that you become the victim of some hacking attack. Therefore as a counteractive measure, a backup is essential; you can still continue working without any delays.
Scenario 4 : If you would like to create a test website of your Drupal installation or the templates and modules, even then getting a backup is highly essential. Preferable in order to avoid any problems, it is recommended to conduct testing in a live environment.

There have been a lot of cases in the past where the entire content on the website was drained as a result of hacks, attacks and also while testing. Therefore taking backups is extremely important.

What is the exact process of taking the backup of your Drupal website?

With the use of a module, the users can take the backup of each file and database and then these backup files can be combined into a single tar.gz file. The files can be restored by uploading them through an FTP client onto the server. Further, SSH using PuTTy to the command directory and enter the following in the command line:

tar -xvvzf drupalbackup.tar.gz

This will extract the files and drupal-backup.sql.gz as well.

In case if you are changing the website location i.e. switching from domainnameA to domainnameB or transferring the data to a sub domain everything mentioned above would be required since the same database would be used. Your website will keep functioning as usual but from a different domain/sub-domain name. However, it must be taken into consideration that the website is still using the same database. In this case, it is crucial to consider some factors. It I important to make sure that the website is functional from the old location, otherwise it would be considered as content duplication and chances are that you may get penalized. In order to avoid that, it is advisable to make a new database by using phpmyadmin. Make the necessary changes to the Drupal config files in a way so that it reads the new database.

\sites\default\settings.php

Need to know information :

It might be the case that the file is set as read-only by default. If any amendments are made to this file, the file permissions will no longer be writable and this can make you prone to attacks and other security risks

You will notice that the file will have only two lines :

$db_url = ‘mysql://account:password@localhost/dbname’;

$db_prefix = ”;

You will now have to simple replace the dbname (database name) with your database name in phpmyadmin. The user name and password will be same as that of your MySQL account.

You must also maike sure that the latest ‘settings.php’ file also has been uploaded. Since the file is usually set as read-only, the FTP client might not grant you the permission to upload and replace the existing file on the server. In this situation, you will have to ‘delete‘ the file on the server. Now try accessing your website in the browser, you will come across an error that says “Unsupported database type”. When you upload the new settings.php file and refresh the browser, a blank page will be displayed. This points towards the fact that the database isn’t accessible. Now, upload the backup of your database and refresh the browser. This will enable you to access your website normally; and then maximum efficiency can be acquired through Drupal Hosting UK.

Note : In order to make your website data secure, it is important to have your website backup with the use of the Offsite Backup Plan.

It provides with various tools that can be used effectively for making your website look much more impressive. The Drupal Hosting UK also becomes very efficient through the management of personal and business websites, personal or corporate blogs; the Drupal system is also used for business collaboration and knowledge management. The look of any website mainly depends on the theme used in it, here is the complete process of installing impressive themes through Drupal.

1. Download The Respective Theme

You can download the the theses that you like from the official Drupal website; they can also be downloaded through some external sites. It is very important to make sure that the theme matches the version of Drupal that you are using. The themes that are labeled “DEV” are in a development stage; they maybe used for a previous/current/future version of Drupal, these themes are considered to be unstable and must be handled with care.

2. Extract The Files

Once you have decided on the particular theme, it will be displayed in a compressed file format like – ‘tar.gz’. You can use a program like 7-Zip to extract it on Windows. In case of the Mac operating system, the Stuffit Expander can be used. In order to extract the file through the Unix command line, the following command can be used:

tar -zxvf themename-drupalversionnumber.tar.gz

This will display a list of files extracted into a folder.

3. Upload The Folder

Copy, SCP or FTP your files to the respective themes folder in your Drupal installation. Since the themes folder present at the top level of Drupal is typically reserved for the core themes of Drupal, it is important to create a sites/themes directory and then the uploaded themes can be put there. In case you are running the multi-site installation on Drupal, you can create a themes folder in sites/my.site.folder and add the themes there that are specific to a particular website in your installation. Themes that are supposed to be shared between all sites must be placed in sites/all/themes.

4. Go Through The Directions

If the theme contains the installation file it will be specified as INSTALL.txt and/or README.txt, go through it for knowing the specific instructions. There are various themes that require special treatment in order to function properly.

5. Enable The Theme

Go to administer > site building > themes. Now check the box named ‘Enable’ that is present next to the theme.

6. Make It Active/Default Theme

This is an optional step. In order to set the theme as Active/Default check the ‘default’ box and then this theme will be set for your website. This action will also enable the users to select the theme, if you have granted the permission.

7. Save The Theme

The theme can be saved by clicking on the ‘save configuration’ button at the bottom.

Drupal is widely popular CMS. The Reason Drupal CMS hosting is so popular with in user because of its powerful platform, scalable, low cost, high value solution to manage entire back end solution for website. Drupal is one of the most preferred content management systems because of the user friendly interface provided. Where as some or the other day client do come up with some issue related to the url structure. One of the common question client asked always, how to manage Drupal temporary url ?

It is possible for the client to easily manage the temporary URL of Drupal. There are some changes needed to be done in the client website. There are also some necessary settings to be done in the Drupal configuration file and then it will work perfectly as it on the main domain url.

Step 1:- You have to check, at what location the Drupal content management system is setup. If Drupal is installed on the main domain example.om and then you want to have a temporary URL which should work as the mentioned structure http://server-ip-address/~example then you will require some necessay changes to do so.

a) You have to search for the file name “settings.php”. In the file mentioned above, you will get into the Drupal installed directory. It wont be difficult for you to find that particular file at the particular location under ”sites/default/settings.php“

b) Open any word editor. Locate the “settings.php” downloaded file on your local machine. In that file, look for $base_url = Previously it should be set to “$base_url = example.com” change it to “$base_url = http://server-ip-address/~example“ save the file and exit it.

Step 2 :- Now your drupal will work fine with temporary url, but accessing internal url will still give error. To fix the changes you have to edit the .htaccess file in the installation directory of drupal and make following changes.

You will have to add the file mentioned below:

add line RewriteBase /~username

Eg: RewriteBase /~testing, and you are all done now.

Drupal one of the most picked content management system is one of the major release new major versions every 9 to 12 months, and there are bug fix releases in between the major releases. Any website using drupal should follow closely of these releases to ensure security issues found are fixed appropriately, as well as keeping up to date of the features introduce in each major releases.

One of the content management systems which is drupal web hosting is one of the biggest releases of new versions after couple of months and there are releases with in those versions but the developers to got some bug which has to be get fixed with in the two major versions. Any site using drupal hosting service should follow closely on these releases to ensure the security problems found appropriate framework, and keep abreast of the functions to introduce each major release.

When every you plan for a script upgrade attempt, before upgrading your drupal web script , go through the entire notes in the upgrade release thoroughly to get an idea of what will be done in the upgrade process, certain upgrades may require some extra steps before performing the regular upgrade procedures.

In general, there are three major steps in performing a manual drupal upgrade :-

Backup Drupal Website And Database :-

This is important and it can save you from a lot of trouble rolling back to a working condition should the upgrade failed, even though you are so familiar in using drupal, you should not skip this important step. You can refer to the cpanel guide on backup up entire website, and mysql database backup.

Steps 1 :- Login to your website hosting account .
Steps 2 :- Then Goto the root folder of your drupal website.
Steps 3 :- Enter Command – cp -a drupal_website backup_drupal_website
This is a quick way to create a backup of a folder, where ‘drupal_website’ is your drupal site folder name, and there could be a new ‘backup_drupal_website’ with in a new folder that will be mirror to your ‘drupal_site’ after the copy process.

Enter the following command to dump out your drupal mysql database into a text file. This is your drupal database backup.
mysqldump –database mysql_dbname > dumpfile.sql

Preparing To Install A New Drupal Program :-

After downloading the compressed drupal program and unzip the files in a new folder in your hosting account, rename the existing drupal folder to another name, rename the newly extracted folder to the drupal folder name.

Copy ‘.htaccess’, ‘settings.php’ (***see NOTE below) file from the old drupal folder to the new drupal folder.
Copy the ‘files’ folder from the old drupal folder to the new drupal folder copy any other files needed (i.e. contributed modules) from the ‘backup’ folder in you old webhosting drupal folder to the new drupal folder, (i.e. contributed modules) etc.
Make sure to check each module to ensure they is not compatibility issues before copying, you might require installing a newer version of certain contributed module instead of copying from old.

NOTE: For drupal version older than ver 4.5, you should look for the includes/conf.php file, copy the following lines from the file and paste them into the settings.php in new drupal folder.

$db_url = mysql://user:pass@localhost/drupal_db’;
$base_url = ‘http://www.example.com’;
$db_prefix = ”;

These are basically the mysql database connection strings for drupal to connect to the mysql database correctly.

How To Run Drupal Software Upgrade Script

The last step in drupal upgrade process is running the update.php script, this script will check and update drupal database if there is a need in the upgrade process. Be sure to login as USER 1 (the first user created after setting up drupal, also known as the drupal site administrator), then enter the URL to the update.php in browser window :-

http://www.example.com/update.php
After completing the process, be sure to check the messages in the screen to ensure everything is completed properly, or if there is anything that requires your attention.

Extra Checking

After completing the entire process, be sure to check through everything is running as expected, especially the customized work you have done on your drupal website. These extra steps are important when you are going to performing a major release upgrades, there is generally a lot more changes to the drupal core than security bug fix releases, and some manual changes is expected if you have a highly customised drupal website.

Post Upgrade Steps

Login to you web hosting or cPanel hosting account which will give you a drupal admin screen to enable new core modules if there is any and remember to also set proper user access permissions for these newly activated modules.

Finally, remove the following files from your drupal folder :-

* install.php
* CHANGELOG.txt
* INSTALL.txt
* LICENSE.txt
* MAINTAINERS.txt
* UPGRADE.txt
