Default Tips needed while migrating the website

I just wanted to know how are the websites migrated from one server to other and one from one hosting provider to other?

Migration would depend upon many things like the hosting platform ie Windows or Linux and the control panel which you are using on the old and the new server.

Migration of data depends on certain factors including the type and amount of data you have. Data includes website files and most of the times database migration is also required. Also, the hosting platform you have before and you choose for the new hosting plan makes a difference. Therefore, we would request you to provide some more information and we will assist you with the procedure of data migration.

While migrating if you are using a similar control panel on both the servers like cPanel on both servers, then migration becomes really easy and the hosting provider can do it for you at no additional cost. If you are using any custom control panel, then you can provide your new hosting provider with a backup of your data. If you were using Windows based hosting plan with your previous provider then the backup should be in “.psa” format and if you were using a Linux based hosting plan then the backup should be in “.tar” format. Make sure that you take a backup of your email on your local machine, because there are chances of loosing emails while migration.

The version of control panel you are using with the existing and new server also makes a difference. For example, if you are using Plesk 10 with the existing server and you choose Plesk 10 with the new one, the migration process is easier as compared to migration with control panels of different versions.

Yes, the control panel version is also very important while migrating. Its specially important in Plesk. Migrating the websites who are using a different control panel is a very tedious job. Suppose anyone is using Plesk 9.3 on one server and 9.5 on another server, then the migration is done easily whereas the same user has Plesk 9.5 on one server and Plesk 10 on another, then the migration becomes much more difficult.
