Getting a small social network on its feet

Do you think it is possible to get a small social network running on a single dedicated server? I (together with some colleagues of mine) was thinking of starting a social networking site such as Friendster, but we can only afford one server at the moment. If the site grows and starts offering some profit, we will purchase more servers...

Or would cloud hosting be better?

You can indeed consider a Dedicated server to host a social networking website. A Cloud server won't give you enough resources for the social networking website and hence my recommendation would be a Dedicated server. You can consider a load balanced solution when your requirements increase in future.
