Server Backups in Theory?

I never had a host that was showed a good responsibility about my backups. I requested a few times my old files to be restored and just once they did it but the backup was too old, which means they do less frequent backups than they claim. How important are server backups... from your experience?

In a nutshell VITAL:

A recent example would be morguefile.com who after a hiccup with the hosting server last year had to restore several terrabytes of photostock images. Site was down almost a week while they worked around the clock to put it all back.

It certainly is wise to have your own local backup copies of everything taken at perodic intervals rather than be relient of the host doing it. The root of the problem lies in the Terms and Conditions which nearly allways contains the line "products or services subject to change without notification"
