Migration of VPS to managed Dedicated Server Hosting

Suppose, if I want to migrate my existing VPS to a new UK dedicated server, how will it affect the downtime and how is the process of the migration? What measures do you take to minimize the downtime?

We keep the current server, in your case a VPS, active until all domains resolve from the new server. You first request the migration once the server set up is complete, change the DNS once the data has been migrated, wait for the domains to resolve from the new server and then have the Billing Dept. cancel the current VPS server.

You should only change DNS when you can confirm all data is now on your new server. Once you have changed the DNS, the domains could also start resolving from the new server in few minutes.

That's right. In case some data is missing on the new server, you can re initiate a transfer before you change DNS. With similar control panels on both servers, there are less chances of some data not getting moved on the new server but it is still recommended to check the data before changing the nameservers.

Do I understand rightly that the websites are active from both server then while the DNS is propagating from the new server? Is there no downtime faced when the data is on both servers?

That's right, the website resolves from either of the servers once you have changed the nameservers. However, there may still be little downtime while propagation. Although propagation is real fast now a days.
