Default What is SIP trunking ?

I have been gathering information about IP telephony since sometime, during the process I've come across something known as SIP trunking. But unfortunately I am not able to understand much about it. I would really appreciate if someone could help me understand it.

Thanks in advance!!

I don't know why is the same question asked on multiple forums. But I have got replies from other forums to your question

Quote:
SIP means session initiation protocol connection is a VOIP service offered by many ITSPs (internet telephony service providers) that connects PBX (private branch exchange) telephone system to the PSTN (public switched telephone system) through the Internet.
Quote:
SIP is an abbreviation of Session Initiation Protocol, it is a new Internet Telephony technology.

It is similar to an IP like the HTTP for web browsing, this is used for making a phone like connection between computers, different computing machines, PDA's, VoIP-Phones or other devices that can communicate over the internet. This technology is supposed to be a cost effective solution for Trunking.
and many more replies.

There are client in the industry those are connected with "SIP Trunk" .In sip trunking you can easily connect a SIP call to a PSTN (analog) line.And if a call is directed to SIP Trunk there could be one would expect the call to be connected (or terminated) from an IP network to a PSTN line.

Benefits of SIP Trunk

* Add lines as you go (not married to or limited to a specific number of lines)
* Fast deployment
* Low maintenance/training & Easier configuration and

Default What is SIP trunking ?

Enterprises wanting to make full use of their installed IP-PBXs and not only communicate over IP within the enterprise, but also outside the enterprise a SIP trunk provided by an Internet Telephony Service Provider to connect to the traditional PSTN network is the solution. Unlike in traditional telephony, where bundles of physical wires were once delivered from the service provider to a business, a SIP trunk allows a company to replace these traditional fixed PSTN lines with PSTN connectivity via a SIP trunking service provider on the Internet.

SIP trunks can offer significant cost-savings for enterprises, eliminating the need for local PSTN gateways, costly ISDN BRIs or PRIs .Three components necessary to successfully deploy SIP trunks: a PBX with a SIP-enabled trunk side, an enterprise edge device understanding SIP and an Internet telephony or SIP trunking service provider.

SIP Trunking is the de facto standard for VoIP applications. A SIP Trunk is primarily a concurrent call that is routed over the IP backbone of a carrier using VoIP technology. SIP Trunks are used in conjunction with an IP-PBX and are thought of as replacements for traditional PRI or analog circuits. The popularity of SIP Trunks is due primarily to the cost savings of SIP along with the increased reliability as backed by the SLAs of SIP Trunk Providers.

A versatile and cost-effective PBX integration/trunk replacement service that delivers the benefits of VoIP while retaining existing traditional or IP PBX/Key systems

SIP Trunking is an open industry standard that allows voice equipment to interoperate with the enterprise data equipment over an IP network. SIP Trunks enable enterprises to create a single, pure IP point-to-point network connection to the Threshold cloud.

No more 1 T1 for voice and 1 T1 for data, now both T1’s can do both!

A SIP trunk can be thought of as a phone line, except that instead of using the traditional copper-wire public switched telephone network (PSTN), it uses the Internet for voice data.

Post Re:

As per me A SIP Trunk is a logical connection between an IP PBX and a Service Provider’s application servers that allows voice over IP traffic to be exchanged between the two. When a call is placed from an internal phone to an external number, the PBX sends the necessary information to the SIP Trunk provider who establishes the call to the dialed number and acts as an intermediary for the call.
