Before deciding if colocation is right for you, there are several factors to consider. First, you must look carefully at the fee structure. Colocation, unlike dedicated servers, requires payment of both rental and connection fees. You will pay a rental fee for the physical space your server will occupy at the host company.

Colocation providers base connection charges on averages instead of the total number of gigabytes transferred during the month. The first is to divide the amount of bandwidth used by the number of seconds in the month. The second method looks at the 95th percentile. To determine transfers using this method, bandwidth is measured every five minutes. At the end of the month, the highest five percent of the readings are dropped.

I tend to think that those who prefer to co-locate are bigger entities with established servers or purchasing new servers that need a level of control, perhaps for security, but don't want to be responsible for physical maintenance.

Yes, if you are looking for physical security for your server/network hardware with optimum network & power uptime guarantee then colocating hardware would be a good option. Co-locating hardware is a cheaper and reliable option compared to setting up and maintaining a full fledged datacenter.
If you are looking for superb network connectivity, hardware security, 100% power & network uptime guarantee along with flexible upgrades for your network equipments then you may use colocation hosting services. It's recommended to go through terms & condition of your preferred colocation partner before you migrate your hardware.

If you own good hardware and can manage your server then you can colocate your hardware in datacenter which is closer to your location or with the one which suits your needs. Colocating hardware is the cheaper option but requires sound knowledge of server management and other related stuffs since most datacenter don't offer you manage server colocation services !

The main benefit of Colocation hosting is that it provides with the internet services which might not be possible always. The downtime of the server is substantially reduced and and the availability is increased. With the colocation method, the setup and maintenance costs can be significantly reduced.
