The difference between Linux web hosting and Windows web Hosting lies on these key points

1. Platform

Linux :- It is an Open-source Operating system which does not require licensing fee.

Windows :- This is Designed/Developed by Microsoft and hence requires licensing fee.

2.Control Panel :

On Linux hosting you can get cPanel or Plesk Control Panel. While on Windows you'll have the option of DotNetPanel & Plesk control panel to manage your hosting account.

3. Scripts :

Windows supports ASP and ASP.NET, PHP, HTML etc while Linux supports PHP, HTML etc. (ASP and ASP.net has been developed by Microsoft and is not supported on Linux)

4.DataBase :
Windows supports MSSQL & MySQL..While Linux supports MySQL only.

Conclusion

I'll suggest you while selecting hosting account what matters more is application/options on offer then the OS on which it is being offered..
What on offer should meet your sites requirement.. the One which meets is the best !

We suggest our customers to host their web site on Linux if they are not utilizing ASP.NET, Coldfusion, MSSQL or any other Windows based application/script. Linux generally does everything that many users want it to.

Post Re:

HI,

The main "advantage" or distinction of Windows servers is that they can run Microsoft software such as Access and MS SQL databases. Windows servers also offer web developers the use of Microsoft's programming environments such as Active Server Pages (ASP), Visual Basic Scripts, MS Index Server.

Some 1-click install scripts will not work on Windows and vise versa but the majority work in both.

Default Difference between Linux web hosting and Windows web hosting

Linux based hosting is the most prominent form of hosting on the Internet. The major advantages are:
  • The technologies that run on Linux hosting, as well as the operating system itself, are all open source.
  • Linux based hosting has a very low cost because of these factors.
  • Linux web hosting scales extremely well, so as your site grows it remains easy to manage.
Disadvantage:
The only downside to Linux hosting is the lack of support for most Windows based applications and coding languages. This is where Windows hosting comes into play.

Windows hosting is based on the Windows operating system. The major advantages are:
  • It is known for support of various programming frameworks, including ASP.net and ColdFusion. Windows hosting can also support SQL server, which can be used to build a site around an online searchable database.
  • Windows based hosting or servers are ideal for those who need easy compatibility of Microsoft based technologies.
Disadvantage:
The cost of Windows web hosting is generally higher than Linux based hosting due to licensing of various Windows environment technologies.

Thank you ammygill for posting the advantages and disadvantages to both.

It's a long-running discussion topic everywhere, but it is up to the client to determine based upon his or her own personal preferences what OS suits the website.
