Default Hyper V - is it worth it??

I recently purchased a Hyper-V VPS Business plan.

I went in and looked at it today for the first time........ OMG! - 60% of the RAM is used up and there isnt a single website on the server yet.

Is it me or does this sound like a really bad deal in comparison to the regular VPS plan?

I cant really see the thing handling more than a few dynamic websites before I'm out of memory.

Does anyone have any suggestions on a reliable web hosting company that offers Hyper V with a more sensible amount of RAM. Tech support are being absolutely no help what so ever. They just seem to repeating what I am telling them - ie. The hosting plan doesnt come with enough RAM to sensibly use it as a web server for multiple clients.

Cheers,

Hello,

The memory usage of a VPS doesn't get affected by the number of Domains hosted on the server (it affects but not on a large scale) but the processes and the services which are running on a server affects the memory and CPU usage. You have Plesk Control Panel, MSSQL, Drweb, Spam Assassin, MySQL, Web server, Mail Server etc running on the VM. All these services require memory to run properly.

So, the memory usage which you can see in the Task manager OR from Plesk is normal for a VM installed with the above listed software's.

Kindly let us know if we can further assist you.

Hi Ben,

There's huge difference between a VPS and a Dedicated Server. MSSQL fails to work properly even on a Dedicated Server with 1GB RAM, so you cannot expect a VPS to do any better. You should have a word with our Sales Team or VPS team before you consider a VPS for such resource intensive applications.

I have voted for "Not when using SQL Server and hosting multiple sites"

Hi Greyhound

To me it sounds like you are on a mission - here with your Hyper V complaints. Don't get me wrong - if you are unhappy then that is one thing, but to actually start a poll too seems a bit extreme as I said before, you do have the option of bailing out if you somehow believe you are being screwed over. I can see Admin had answered your questions and admitted their liability somewhat, but you still appear unsatisfied with the whole thing. For what it is worth (and please I don't work for these guys) I think that WHUK has and does provide a pretty decent service at the costs they charge

If you want problems then you should try hosting with other larger servers who promise the earth and really DO fail to deliver the goods - I should know - I did use one of the largest recognised companies around and when it came push to shove, they were completely and utterly useless, even as far as wanting me to apologise for something I hadn't even done

Come on - use your support tickets and 24/7 support features. That is why they are there

Default Mission Statement

Dude,

For anyone else considering webhostinguk, I would say the initial setup can be a little less then desired but the overall experience far exceeds most other ISPs' in the same budget range.

I'm not on any mission other than providing the best possible service I can to my clients.

I'm learning as I go - personally I have found that 1GB of memory, SQL Server and websites is not enough.

If I were running the company I simply wouldnt offer SQL Server as an option on 1GB as it isnt enough.

The pole is optional - you do not have to take it if you dont want - that goes for the rest of the population also.

Do I think webhostinguk are good? Simple answer = yes. They are hands down the best company I have dealt with in regards to ISP support and I would recommend them to anyone.

I have had a load of trouble with this Hyper V package and in retrospect should have chosen something else - I really dont think Hyper V will take over the world, it just doesnt work very well. Will this stop me? No - the decision to go for this package was mine and mine alone. As I said - I am learning as I go.

Going forward - I'm going to learn from my mistake, upgrade and I'm also buying an enterprise package on behalf of a client so no mission here other than supporting webhostinguk, supporting my clients and creating a pole to help others decide whether 1GB of RAM is enough to run Hyper V with SQL Server.

Cheers,
