Default VPS Hosting FAQs

Hi all, hoping that someone will be able to give me a few pointers re my vps.

I am new to WHM although I have used cpanel for sometime now, but never administrative rights.

I have a few questions can anyone shed any light?

1.) While I wait for the DNS to resolve at my vps. When I browse using the ip addy, I get the:

"Great Success !
Apache is working on your cPanel® and WHM™ Server"

Am I supposed to remove this page and if so, how?

2) How do you gain access to files such as one above to edit/delete?

3) How do you change the emails sent! when for i.e; setting up new accounts? I can't find anything in WHM.

4) The domain name I used for registering the vps is the same domain name I want to use to setup a website. Is this ok or is it best if the vps domain name is not used?

Any help on above much appreciated. As you can see, I am struggling with the basics. But appear to be able to set up accounts ,packages and so on without any problems

Kind regards
Jon

All 4 questions have been answered as follows :-

1.) While I wait for the DNS to resolve at my vps. When I browse using the ip addy, I get the:
"Great Success !
Apache is working on your cPanel® and WHM™ Server"
Am I supposed to remove this page and if so, how?
Ans :- You cannot remove this page as this is the default index page of your vps and the shared IP of your vps points to this page. To access your websites with temporary URL you will need to put http://87.117.236.*/~username/ in the browser. You can see the website with the IP address only if you assign a dedicated IP to one of your websites.

2) How do you gain access to files such as one above to edit/delete?
Ans :- This index page is located in /usr/local/apache/htdocs/ with name index.html. You can edit that through SSH or simply open httpd.conf from SSH and edit the default path of the first virtual alias and point it to the directory where you have the preferred index page.

3) How do you change the emails sent! when for i.e; setting up new accounts? I can't find anything in WHM.
Ans :- I am little confused with this question but email addresses can be setup from cpanel and WHM is just for administration of accounts.

4) The domain name I used for registering the vps is the same domain name I want to use to setup a website. Is this ok or is it best if the vps domain name is not used?
Ans :- There's no problem in using the same domain name to setup an account from WHM. we ask for a domain name at the time of signup just to make it comfortable for us to search your account information but we dont setup any hosting or any service for your domain name. You need to setup hosting for your domain name from your WHM.

Thank you for your replies. That has cleared up my worries.

As to question 3:

If I setup a new cpanel hosting account, the email address given for this new account will receive an automated email via WHM saying new account set up. Same as if I modify the account an email will be sent to the account holder.
Is it possible to edit this email? to customize it?

If not, how can I turn this auto email off

Many thanks

When you setup a new account then the server owner will receive email. You can setup this email address from "contact manager" section in your WHM. Account setup email address is not notified about setup of new account. WHM uses that email address to send quota and bandwidth overages notifications.

Ah, now i understand. I used the same email addy that is why I thought it was going to new account holder.

So WHM doesn't have a billing system. I don't know why I thought it did, I guess it was from receiving automated emails from various hostings plans I have had in the past, that used WHM and Cpanel.

Thanks again
Jon

WHM / Cpanel has no internal billing system. We use modernbill for billing and some of our customers use whmautopilot / whoiscart for billing.

All this billing softwares provide remote account setup feature which allows you to automate billing as well as account setup in WHM.

I had a look at WHMAP and looks very good, as do the others.

I am having trouble with nameservers. I use Amenworld and have changed my nameservers a couple of times without any problems. This time it appears that although it has changed the name (ns1.ttsmedia.com, ns2.ttsmedia.com), it won't change the ip address! It was pointing at pipex servers and still is. I rechecked all the settings and came across setting up an ip address to point to a server. I set this up using the hostname "server.ttsmedia.com" with the ip you gave me.

Was this right to do?
Basically what I have done is:

Normally I just have to modify the DSN servers. (this for some reason won't change the ips even though i set them)

This time I have "registered DNS server" and used my server name and ip address. Again, not sure if I should have done this and guess I will have to wait until is filters through the whois records.

I dont think that the IP addresses of your nameservers have changed. I see that ns1.ttsmedia.com and ns2.ttsmedia.com are pointing to IP addresses on 123-reg network and there's no sign of any pending change on this nameservers.

You have an option of using private nameservers which we assign to vps customers and you can get a set of private nameservers for your vps from our vps support team.

Do let me know if you face any problem anywhere.

I wish i hadn't used my main business domain for the vps. I didn't realise at the time that all our business emails are tied to this domain.

I am not quite sure what you mean, I thought the private nameservers were ns1.yourdomain, etc...... Should the vps domain nameservers be set to webhosting.uk.com and just my accounts set to ttsmedia nameservers?

I desperately need this to resolve asap because i believe any emails i am likely to recieve while the nameservers are in 'limbo' will be lost forever.

I know it is my fault, just looking for a solution.
I don't fancy the prospect of waiting 72 hours just to find out what i have done wrong.

Is it possible to give you the login to amenworld so you could set it for me and check my config in WHM

Let us know the login details for amenworld through our helpdesk. Include URL of this thread as that will be helpful for our vps team members to go ahead without permission of other senior members.

We have another anonymous domain reserved which we use for setup of nameservers of vps customers as the problem you are facing is a common problem which is faced by every other vps customer.

There's no problem in using your main domain for vps as dns updates dont take so long this days but one should understand DNS very well to change hosting without any downtime.

Please open a ticket immediately for our vps support team and include this thread in it.

That's great my site is back up and running and more importantly my emails are.

Just one slight worry, everytime i login to the WHM, I receive a popup box "Hostname A entry missing". i click, it runs through the settings and then updates. |Email seems to work fine. On googling it mentions no Hostname set, but mine appears to be set.
When I click ok, it lists my nameservers as my ip address but os that correct? You mention using another ip for the nameservers???

thx

You will need to reopen the ticket for this problem. Our vps engineers will add A entry and make it work. Once the hostname of your vps starts resolving then you wont get that popup window again. Basically that makes no problem for any service but it should be added to ensure that emails sent through mailing lists or forms dont get rejected from destination servers.
