No doubt in my mind to go with Opteron. Opteron has stomped Xeon in almost every category without any difficulty with its superior performance.
The fastest AMD dual core CPUs were the Opteron 285SE and 885SE used in Sun's Galaxy line
The Opterons are known to perform much better while running at slower clock speeds and utilize only half the amount of on-die L2 cache. Very less power is consumed by AMD’s chips and run quite a bit cooler.

I prefer Dual Xeons as the CPU cache options available in Xeons help in improving processing speed.

Opterons face many problems in long run and maintenace is not an easy task. CPU cache is the deciding factor while choosing a processor and I dont believe in clock speed.

My first reaction would have been to say Opterons but Admin's comments are interesting. What problems do you think Opteron's are going to suffer from and why is maintenance more problematic?

Dual Xeon - Extremely powerfull, nice features, good speed and are often faster in database use.

Both are good but if you have to choose from the two then i guess Dual Xeon gets the lead but whats wrong with the maintenance of Opteron, Admin?? Is maintaining Opteron expensive in monetary terms or what else??

Finding updates and patches for 64 bit system is not so easy and when you dont have flexibility to upgrade kernels or security settings due to hardware limitations then things become very difficult.

One of our friend uses opterons for his hosting business and he is not able to host more than 50% of accounts compared to our servers. We have very similar configuration but the only difference is that he has opterons and we have dual xeons.

Load on our servers always remains below 1 and his servers keep on playing from 5 - 25. He was looking to sale those servers and buy some new dual xeons but the resale value of opterons makes things difficult for him as opterons dont have good resale price.

I have never looked into technical differentiation as many people consider opterons better than Dual Xeons but its not worth if they fail to give results for your business.

thanks fro the info admin.

In one of the forums I've read that Dual Xeon can support 32GB of RAM, is this true?

Yes, it’s true that many hosts preferred dual Xeons as updates and patches are easily available for it compared to 64-bit opterons. That does not mean opterons is less in performance, it will not take much time IF it can overcome the issue of updates and patches as mentioned by admin. Anyways for hosting business Dual Xeon is sufficient enough to fullfil the needs of a business.
