Default The right package for me?

Hi there, i found this forum looking for help.

There's so many different hosting companies and packages out there, im not sure which one is right for me. I've looked at websites where they rate different companies and list their top 10, but non of those websites seem to match and always find a lot of bad reviews of the so called top 10 on other websites...

so, if you guys could recommend me a company and a package then it would be great. I'm looking to pay about maybe, £5 a month? is that reasonable?

I'm not far away from graduating from university and I'm wanting to build an online portfolio of all my work. Mainly for job interviews. I'm studying Multimedia so i may need a fair bit of space to upload some of my work such as videos and animations. I believe the only people going onto the website will be employers so i don't think I'll need a lot of bandwidth? I'm not sure...

I'm not familiar with different scripting languages... i was planning on creating the website on notepad using html and a bit of frontpage to see how it looks.

so yeah, if anyone here could help me out it would be great.

Hi Mr Derek, welcome to WHUK,

I've been running my own websites now for about 5 years and I've been around a fair few of the UK hosting companies. With most of them I outgrew their products and needed a cheaper alternative when upgrading, some of them I left due to poor service. I started off paying £12 a year, I now have a combined bill of £40 a month (excluding domain name renewals).

Support and guidance are the main two features you need at your current stage. Guidance is available by the active UKWH forums and support is excellent, through both call tickets, email and even live chat - which is fantastic and very quick.

In terms of package, I would probably suggest something from http://www.webhosting.uk.com/cpanel-hosting.php they start from 20GBP a YEAR!, but the 60 GBP package would have the 5Gb you may need for multimedia, whilst coming in within your budget. The packages also give you cpanel which will enable you familiarity when you upgrade in the future.

Hope that helps.

Just before you register and commit your sites to a hoster, you should ask the questions as on the following. The asnwer that they offer should be something like the response below. It is USELESS and POINTLESS to pay cheap but you lost all your data when a disaster strikes.

1) Is it not the webhost's responsibility to backup these "store" files?
A> Yes. The web hoster is responsible for all the customer data and files. They should have a backup plan in their mind and if a disaster strikes, they should bring your sites UP as soon as possible. A hoster without a disaster recovery plan should be AVOIDED by all means!

2) Do I seem unreasonable in asking for damages since they lost all this info, including 100's of customer profiles & outstanding orders?
A> You should try to ask for the compensation. Please read their TOS carefully.

For proof that WHUK treat their customers fairly when things go wrong, (point 2 raised in this post), you need look no further than http://www.webhosting.uk.com/forums/...86&postcount=7

No-one actually asked for compenstaion at this stage......it was automatically offered!
