here is an edited transcript of a chat i had earlier. Maybe someone can shed some light on my problem.
Sebastian: How may I assist you today ? jon: hi, i am still having trouble viewing a domain that i transferred from another server on Friday. The site i see is the site on the old server. I spoke to my isp (Ronan thought it must be the isp cache at fault), but they said that if i can update another domain and see the updated info straight away (which i can), then it can't be the isp cache.......... jon: does that make any sense? Sebastian: you mean your domains are still pointing to old host ? jon: no not if you do a whois lookup. The domain is pointing to my server here. If i use a proxy it also shows the domain here, but my pc shows site from old server jon: done cache clean up, blah, blah, blah Sebastian: let me know the domain name jon: raynerfamily.org.uk jon: if i do a tracert from my pc it also shows domain pointing to old server jon: this is what i see: http://69.72.244.66/~westdors/ Sebastian: what is your current VPS Ip address 69.72.244.66 ? jon: no jon: 91.186.25.99 Sebastian: root@support [~]# ping raynerfamily.org.uk Sebastian: PING raynerfamily.org.uk (91.186.25.99) 56(84) bytes of data. Sebastian: 64 bytes from server.ttsmedia.com (91.186.25.99): icmp_seq=0 ttl=57 time=2.24 ms Sebastian: 64 bytes from server.ttsmedia.com (91.186.25.99): icmp_seq=1 ttl=57 time=5.63 ms Sebastian: 64 bytes from server.ttsmedia.com (91.186.25.99): icmp_seq=2 ttl=57 time=2.25 ms Sebastian: 64 bytes from server.ttsmedia.com (91.186.25.99): icmp_seq=3 ttl=57 time=2.48 ms Sebastian: let me try same from our US and other UK servers jon: ok here's mine: jon: Pinging raynerfamily.org.uk [69.72.244.66] with 32 bytes of data: Reply from 69.72.244.66: bytes=32 time=137ms TTL=55 Reply from 69.72.244.66: bytes=32 time=133ms TTL=55 Reply from 69.72.244.66: bytes=32 time=131ms TTL=55 Reply from 69.72.244.66: bytes=32 time=160ms TTL=55 Ping statistics for 69.72.244.66: Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss), Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds: Minimum = 131ms, Maximum = 160ms, Average = 140ms Sebastian: I have tried same from other servers and result is 91.186.25.99 jon: I just can't understand why all 4 of the pcs in my house are looking at old server jon: why is my ping showing old address? do you know? jon: This has been same since friday night jon: It must be my isp but they say not, so what can i do? jon: They also say isp cache would have been cleared many times since friday Sebastian: let me try to update some site contents jon: ok jon: that new design you are looking at is just rubbish anyway so feel free to do whatever Sebastian: please try to access http://raynerfamily.org.uk/index2.php jon: page not found Sebastian: and it is working fine at my end Sebastian: this means that the problem is at your end Sebastian: you have to find out in any way Sebastian: their is no firewall in VPS which is stopping you to access / ping to your site jon: I need to speak to the isp again then. it is just i can't make them understand, i was passed to 3 peaople before they understood jon: it has to be isp cache doesn't it? Sebastian: yes Rung them but waste of time as i knew it would be (pipex). Has anyone had any experience of this before? I know it must be an isp problem but where do i go from here?

Hello Jon,
I suggest that you try and change the DNS servers you are using to connect to the internet on your local computer. A fresh set of resolvers may solve your problem. |

Hi Nick thx for the suggestion. I am just looking at trying that now. The problem I see at the moment is that I use DHCP on my router with auto config on my pcs'. I don't know if or how it affects my connection but am reading up on it.
I have read a couple of times now that some isp's actually cache dns to ip address for days and it is different to the webpage cache. They deny it but seems to me that is what could be the problem. Obviously if you register a new domain there is no record so you won't see a problem, but moving a domain from one ip to another will. It certainly seems to me that this is the case, why else am I able to update all other sites and immediately view the updates but not just on this particular domain? If this is the case then I guess in a few days all will be well. Actually thinking about it, this has happened before. When you moved me to another server. After a couple of days all the domains pointed to the new ips (using whois to check), then I did a few updates on a couple of domains. A few days after, the updates i had done had dissapeared without trace! I had obviously done the updates on the old ips without knowing it because of mp isp's cache. I wonder if this is sounding familiar to anyone else? Disappearing updates recently after a ip change!!

DNS Report shows absolutely no DNS errors with your domain. You can verify from http://www.dnsstuff.com/tools/dnsrep...rfamily.org.uk You should communicate with your ISP and provide them with traceroute logs to troubleshoot. send traceroute details to our VPS Team as well as we would like to see where exactly your connection is getting blocked.

Hi Admin, I checked dnsstuff on Saturday and knew there were no errors.
I know it is an isp problem and am convinced it is as i stated above. The problem is speaking to these people is a waste of time. I am now told that because pipex is now Tiscali and they are moving everything over, this is causing unusual errors and problems for some people but will be cleared up soon. Now what the hell can you do with that kind of information? I tell them about my tracert and ask them about them caching ip/dns which they deny. Then i ask well what other explanation is there since my pc at work also use pipex and has the same problem, but a BT and AOL user can see my site fine? I have already wasted £8 on phone bills so my only option now is to wait until friday. Friday will be the 7th day since the transfer and hoping that the cache doesn't last longer than that before it is dumped.

Ha Ha SUCCESS!
Thanks Nick. I used OpenDNS addresses to see whether it WAS definately a dns isp problem (obviously we knew it was), and I can now see the site. My only concern now it that i am breaking the rules and regs of Pipex/Tiscali by using outside dns, but what can I do! I will leave it for now and test it each day to see whather the dns cache has been flushed.

I have been with Pipex for years and been one of the lucky ones as far as very little problems as far as Pipex the isp is concerned. Pipex hosting is another matter. But since November my speed has dropped from 6 meg to 1.5, and now this! All brought about since Tiscali took over. Another strange thing is that i tried to register for the Tiscali forum to put my annoyance on there, and it won't let me register. Tried 3 pipex email addresses and it states they are all banned. I have never even been to the site before so what is going on there? Are all pipex customers banned? I wonder! Fun times ahead no doubt. ![]()

Well after 6 days all is now ok. I removed the openDNS ips this afternoon and the site is now showing correctly.
I still can't believe that it took 6 days for Pipex/Tiscali to flush their dns cache. Unbelievable! Anyway i am convinced I am just the first in a long line of pipex customers who will experience this problem shortly.

We wont get into that Biz
![]() We had quite a few offers to start broadband service, but we ignored all those as customer satisfaction is more important for us and we are least bothered about what opportunities we may get with Broadband service.
