addon domains and such

Hello there. I have recently posted concerning various hosting plans (you can see the post further down the page somewhere). It seems that vps hosting is the option I'm currently looking at. This is basically because our site is set up with lots of virtual hosts so our main site (wickhill.com) contains within it folders for our other websites. And the virtual hosting means that if users enter wgutm.com then they get that exact address instead of wickill.com/wgutm So as to make these sub sites seem totally independant of the main site directory they are stored in....

Anyhow, sorry if I'm explaining a bit too much, but I am a beginner in this business, who has suddenly been asked about moving our internally hosted site to another host...

Basically I belive only vps allows you access to http config files, which I use to access and add these vitual domain names. But I have been looking at the standard shared hosting plans (not vps) and these allow unlimited addon domains! So are these the same as what I've been talking about? So I could add a totally different domain name and simply point it to the appropriate sub folder in my main site? this seems a lot easier than faffing about with server files.

Any comments would be greatfully appreciated....

hi,
yes addon domains create a sub directory automatically for you when you add the domain name, so sounds to me as though this is the setup you have at present.
So there is no messing about, all done automatically for you

Thats good news. So I can still have all of the folders within the main site (wickhill.com) but when I set them up as addon domains they will appear independant (www.abc.com, instead of wickhill.com/abc)? this would be handy as I could keep my site files in the same folder structure as they are at the moment in dreamweaver, so I could ftp pages as normal without splitting it in to many different sites.

Yes that is how it works.
When you add the domain say abc.com. It auto creates a sub folder within your main directory called abc.
So to view this website you can either use abc.com or mydomain.com/abc

All the addons work like seperate domains with their own addresses, but they are also subdomains of the main domain (if that makes sense).

Now as far as ftp is concerned, each addon creates it's own ftp login, so you would need a 'master'; ftp account (don't know the exact terminology), so you can access all these domains from within the main directory wickhill.com

I am not sure how to do this. I think i remember using your main ftp for your main account won't allow you to edit or upload files in the sub folders (maybe wrong).

Ok. Yes thats basically how the site is set up at the moment. A user can go to www.wg-utm.com or they can go to ww.wickhill.com/wg-utm.

But you think I would'nt be able to upload addon domain files in the same way as I currently am? (The whole site and sub sites upload using one ftp account, as they are seen as just one big site)

I'll have to get on to live help at some point

One other quick question. Our wickhill site has a number of different domain addresses (.com .co.uk .net etc) Would this have to work the same way as the addons, as these different domain names are also set up as virtual hosts on the server httpd.conf file?

Ignore the last question. I can just create a normal domain (not an addon) and just point the different addresses to the same wickhill site..

on a shared plan, you would use 'parked domains' to do this job, so you need addon and parked options on our plan.
Did you find out about ftp?

Can an admin confirm that this is the case with regards to ftp? Can I use one ftp for the whole site including sub sites? Or would I need to have separate ftp logins?

You have various options while adding new FTP accounts. You can either allow new user to FTP all files and folders or you can assign a specific directory for new FTP user account. Try adding few new accounts from cpanel and check.
