Default what hosting do I need?

HI I'm the web dev for a company called Wick Hill in Woking, Surrey. At the moment we host our site on our own servers. the company is now considering external hosting...I'm just wondering which type would be best for us.

The site is around 4GB in size and within the main site folder we also have various microsites for our clients. Although these sites are within the wickhill.com site, they still have independant addresses (i.e "sitename.com" instead of "wickhill.com/sitename"). So to do this we have to access the httpd config file on the server and add the site names to the list for them to appear individual when browsed... Anyway I'm wondering whether I would still be able to do this, and on what service if available. I've only been in the job three months and its my first job since graduating so my knowledge of this type of thing is limited...I basically make nice websites, but dont fully know what goes on under the bonnet...

Hi Shaun, best waiting for the admin team to reply, but a vps, semi-dedicated or dedicated I would presume.
There are various ways to add other domains to an account, one way is using a feature called 'add-on' domains (funny enough), which seems to me the way you described it is what you have right now. And the other is to just create seperate accounts within your hosting package if you have a vps, or semi-dedi, dedi.

But best wait for the pros to reply or use the live chat option on the homepage and get a reply straight away

Hi Shaun!

You can consider our Starter VPS plan with cpanel control panel as our VPS will be perfect solution for your requirement. You can use addon domain functionality of cpanel to host other website with their separate webpages.

With VPS you can make separate cpanel account for each domain so you will be able to give separate control panel access to all members who have their individual websites with you.

Thanks, thats given me a bit more information on the hosting issues. With regards to giving control panel access for each individual site, I would not need to do that as I update all the sites myself. So just as long as I can get separate web site domain names working from within the main sites files I'm happy. It means I wont have to struggle away tearing the sites out and sticking them in their own areas. So if vps can do this then great. I did read somewhere that vps allows you to access the server files so I can add sites the same way as I have been, is this correct? or does a gui interface allow me to do the same sort of thing?

Hi Shaun,

Yes you have full access over your VPS server with regards to config files. You will have access to the HTTP.conf file for example.

further to these answers you have given me, I believe the term for the site design I want to do is "virtual hosting". Where the server has multiple names running on the same IP address to create individual sites from the same main site directory. So this is available with vps hosting then?

And would I get help with this set up if we decide to go for your hosting? As I say I'm a bit of a web noob. Also is there a site search feature available? At the moment I'm using php dig (which was already being used when I got the job, so I have no idea how to re-install it).

I think you can be able to host several different web sites alongside using separate DNS from same server. For more questions check their knowledgebase here;

Surely Admin or one of the sales team should be taking part in this thread? Dan is doing an admirable job of answering Shaun's questions but unless he's on commission now a company employee should be taking part.

You will need to contact your webmaster for site search feature. Search option is included in many Content Management systems as well as blogs. We have wordpress blog for our knowledgebase and you can see the search feature included in our knowledgebase. You can install a wordpress blog from your control panel and customize its look and feel.
