Default Difference between shared reseller hosting and VPS hosting

I am trying to get info about the differences between shared reseller and vps.

Currently I have shared but it seems I am to be upgraded to VPS and I am wondering what I gain and what I lose by the move?

Is there a different control panel or WHM?

What restrictions are there in the way of running my custom scripts which consist of either shopping cart database software or mailouts for my customers to send newsletters to their customers?

On the shared it is 200 mails per 60 mins is it different on a vps?

Anyone know what Virtuozzo is?

SSH Root Access - I assume this means I can telnet the server?

Doe it also mean I have control of things like the PHP.ini?

And finally, any guidance on all this?????

Hi,
Yes it is WHM.
Virtuozzo makes your VPS more stable and controls the server resources far better than simply using WHM

Yes you have shell access to the server using telnet.

You have control over files like php.ini so you can set whether register_globals on or off. Increase your image upload memory, etc.

Also the added advantage of updating to the latest WHM, Cpanel and PHP version whenever it suits.

Can't help on the mail query!!

I had a few problems on my VPS when i first signed up, especially with WHM being slow and unresponsive, then they moved me over to Virtuozzo and everything has been fine sinse.

I think a VPS is just the same as having a dedi server, you control practically everything (that would be a managed dedi i am referring to)

Indeed, what Jon said. I don't have a clue either regarding the mail issues but i certainly know that everything else above is accurate.

VPS (Virtual Private Server) is basically a dedicated server but shared, the only difference to it from a reseller is you can manage it exactly the same as a dedicated server and it even has it's own services. Before purchasing a dedicated server for the first time i would reccomend you purchase a VPS and have a go at using the controls, it's a cheap workaround for learning about dedicated servers.

Hosts usually provide cpanel & WHM wFantastico, webmin, directadmin, plesk or no panel at all. The choice of the panel has to do with the amount of resources available in your VPS plan, as cpanel takes a lot of resources and isn't recommended on plans with RAM less than 512MB.

Shared accounts have different rules, it's up to the host to set the linit of solicited emails per hour.

Virtuozzo creates isolated, secure virtual private servers (VPSs) or virtual environments on a single physical server enabling better server utilization, ensuring guaranteed resources and preventing applications from conflicting. Each VPS performs and executes exactly like a stand-alone server; VPSs can be rebooted independently and have users, IP addresses, processes, system libraries and configuration files.

Well, I would prefer Virtuozzo VPS as it has own filesystem, root user, and configurations, so for each VPS its own separate system that meet up all intents and purposes.
