Default Windows vs Linux hosting

Which one do you prefer, windows or linux hosting? Which one is more secure? Which one is more stable? What is the difference between the two? Which one is easier to use?

Come tell me as much as you know about the two because i don't know much about hosting especially, linux hosting.

Personally i prefer Linux hosting as linux servers are most secure, cheap in cost, more stable and easy to maintain and upgrade; Most important Linux is opensource OS which give us full authority to install only required packages and can upgrade anytime free of cost.

If you are in love with Microsoft products like FrontPage, MS Access databases, Microsoft SQL and alike for your site then you have to go with Windows hosting.

Thumbs up

Linux Hosting

* include MySQL databases
* PHP
* FTP accounts
* email accounts
* You may also have the ability to host more than one domain name at the same account.

Windows Hosting

* include Microsoft Access and/or Microsoft SQL databases
* PHP and ASP
* FTP
* Email accounts
* As with the Linux Hosting you may be able to host more than one domain - depending on your hosting service provider.

I have never tries Windows server only Linux. Mainly because i have no idea what you can do with it, and because Linux and Apache were always regarded as the one to use anyway.

What can you do with Windows?

Can you have an online Access database, so if someone came to me and asked if they could upload their products xsl onto the net, could they?

Can you run powerpoint presentations on it?

Also what about Excel?

|Anyone....

I also used and use Linux hosting from xxxxxxx. And I should say it's very easy and usable service.
What's the main difference between Linux and Windows servers?

Are you sure you don't mean Adobe Dreamweaver?

And that has nothing to do with Linux hosting. You could use Dreamweaver (running on your local machine) to create a Web site which you then uploaded to a Web server (which could be running on Windows or Linux).

The pros would be the obvious ones of the type of programming languages and databases available to you. As far as speed, uptime, and overall performance, I personally prefer Linux because it seems to be the more reliable and offer the better performance. However, any server is only as good as its administrator.
If you intend to develop your site using ASP, FrontPage, the .NET environment, Windows Streaming Media, Access, MSSQL, or any of the other Microsoft’s owned technologies then Windows hosting is the answer to your requirement.
Other than that, majority of web features including PHP, MySQL, POP3 etc run fine on both Windows as well as Linux platforms.

I am just about to transfer my main website here and, like my other sites, I use Frontpage. All of them are on Linux shared hosting. Should I ask for my new one to be on Windows - the others seem to work fine on Linux.

Please don't choose Windows

You really don't need Windows and you will need to learn a new control panel once again. cPanel is the best control panel in hosting industry so stay with Linux - cPanel plans only.

I do not wish to see a happy customer ranting the forum as I am quite sure that Windows will frustrate you in long run. You never get that much flexibility on windows and the available features on windows are less in comparison with Linux - cPanel.

We offer windows as customers need to host ASP.NET websites and MSSQL databases but they don't get all other addon features that come with cPanel.
