I think Flash sites are generally not well ranked mainly because of not having spiderable content on the site. When search engines crawl a site they look for text. Flash and images like JPEGs and GIFs are not easily crawlable.

Flash in site does have an effect on the site's rankings. So to get a decent ranking for a flash site in search engines, it is not recommended to build a complete flash site. Concentrate on developing Flash animations or movies that can be inserted into HTML pages, the HTML page can then be optimized with indexable content, keywords and meta tags.

Yep, on both as user perspective and SEO point of view I think CSS/ (X)HTML/XML/ to be core technologies upon which web site should be based on, others are just optional and peripheral.

The new 'embed' function that resulted from IE's latest upgrade also really helps with search engine recognition and therefore site ranking! Spending time working on your meta tags and page descriptions is well worth it. If you want to make a site totally in Flash then that should have no detrimental effects on your rating as long as your index.html has all the necessary information in it!

Yep, I have recently gone through an article by Matt Cutts, the search engine is changing their criteria for flash though I am not talking about total flash site.
