The excellent IBM developerworks site has just started a series of articles that take you through the development of a blogging application in the three main PHP frameworks: CakePHP, Symfony and Zend.
Worth reading to get a good feel for the frameworks even if you don't want to build the app.

Good ol' Zendo, what would we do without it?

I did notice that the instructions on installing Zend on a shared hosting account are pretty poor, but not as bad as cake. Seems detailed instructions are on the wiki, but they don't exist. google doesn't help much either
Anyway good link, i may try all 3

Cakes install sounds worse than it is - in practice I've installed it on several different servers with no problems at all.
I'm reconsidering Zend now but I've started playing with C# recently so I may stick to ASP.NET for a while. Symfony is the third of the main PHP frameworks - has anyone ever used it?

i have decided Zend is not for me so I am going to try symfony. Problem is i can't download the sandbox, getting speed of 1.4Kb/s which drops to nothing so won't download
