Default IE7 RC1 Released

MS have promoted IE7 out of beta. Release candidate one can be downloaded here. It requires two reboots, a genuine advantage check and the MS Malicious Software Removal tool....but if you can live with all that it looks ok. Still no word as to whether it will eventually be a required update though. So in a few months time Web design might be even more confused with FF, IE6 and IE7 all having a reasonable percentage of users.

*EDIT* Apparently I jumped the gun - the IE7 team have confirmed that it will be a required update delivered through Windows Update. There's more information and a long list of improvements and bug-fixes here. It all looks pretty impressive and if you do any Web development it's probably time to start checking your sites don't fall apart in the new browser (possible if you've used CSS hacks).

Png transparency should be supported according to blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2005/04/26/412263.aspx . I've tested it out in my beta 3 copy and everything is ok but I still haven't got around to installing RC1.

Paul Thurrot has a good overview of the changes at winsupersite.com/reviews/ie7_rc1.asp .

I'm definately going to get around to installing the update this afternoon, as soon as I've finished installing OSX on non-mac hardware
