server side validation of the email address submitted by the person filling your form or the email address to which the form will be emailed ?

Yes, I want to check whether the given email is in correct format or not. But I want to do it with php and not a javascript.

You need to use a regular expression. If you don't know anything about reg ex then it's worth looking them up to get a general idea. They can be horribly complicated. Luckily Zend have a good tutorial on exactly this topic with a pre-written function you can use.
