Integrating forums and website login/register

I kinda need some help in this process.
I got a phpbb forums and a relatively simple login script, Basically I want them both to be integrated in both login parts and registering parts
I know the basis of what to do, (control the cookies for login and send queries to post in the other database )
I just need a bit more info to complete the process.
I also need to know how to redirect if their not logged in because right now, mine just redirects even if your logged in

Been a while since I have used phpbb but can you not just create your own login form using the fields set out in the mysql db, then remove or redirect the login/register on the forum? Overall_header.tpl comes to mind.
Or maybe just copy and paste the login script from the forum!!
