Default Anti-aliased images

Why we choose anti-aliased images or text for our web pages ?
Do they affect page appearance ?

Anti-aliasing is a way of getting rid of the jagged edges that otherwise appear on text or images.

Because the pixels generated by a computer are square by default any curve will appear jagged at a low enough resolution. Anti-aliasing helps fudge this so we get better looking curves.

Subtle but noticable.
