Photoshop help

Omg i feel like the biggest loser. I cant get my paint brushes to paint in photoshop ) Im a beginner as you probably figure, but for no reason can i get some color on the brushes. I am able to use the pencil with color yet the brushes dont cooperate. When i try to use them over something of color they instead of paint remove color. Someone please help me its driving me nuts. Thanks if you dont understand what im trying to explain please ask me
