Default Favourite Text Editor?

I'm looking for a (preferably free) replacement for my ageing copy of Homesite. I've tried PSPad and HTML Kit but I'm not entirely happy with them and I don't want to spend the next fortnight trying out all the allternatives.

So what's everyone's text editor of choice (on Windows, *nix is blessed with far too many good editors)? And why?

Before posting a new thread about text editor, thought searching for the one, and got this one.

I am using EditPad. Why?
EditPad Pro is very configurable. Almost every aspect can be adjusted to your own tastes and habits. Many settings can be made separately for each file type. You can access all of EditPad Pro's functionality through the main menu. Once you get used to working with EditPad Pro, you'll mostly rely on the fully configurable toolbar and keyboard shortcuts.

I'd forgotten all about this. For a lightweight editor I now use Crimson Edit or Notepad 2 but for development I've switched entirely to Eclipse after almost going for Zend Studio (for PHP work). Eclipse is the dogs bollocks and there is a nice SVN extension which is handy if you are working as part of a team or if version control is important to you.

I use notepad++
Really easy to use and has line numbers built in which can be handy.

I should have mentioned that the one problem with Eclipse is the rather steep learning curve.

Decent feature list but I'm not sure I'd go for a simple text editor that was written in Java.

Try editpadpro.com/editpadlite.htmlIt's really good because of its ability to have multiple tabs and a stupidly easy to use interface thats almost impossible to get lost in.

Like that one - might give it a go for a while.

Notepad is the best!
Again, it gives you the freedom to do what you want.
