VPS or Dedicated server
Hi,
Can any one guide me why dedicated server is better than a VPS hosting. I know tha VPS is gives user experience of almost same quality as of a dedicated server and its based on virtualization and in case of dedicated server its proper physical hardware is available but my doubt whether there is difference in performance, uptime and user experience

In order to see the difference between Dedicated Servers Vs VPS, you have to know if what these servers are for.
Dedicated servers are intended for clients who have huge websites which also have high traffics. This server is preferable because of its bandwidth as well as performance. In this set-up, each server run on its separate hardware installation and does not share any resource with other servers. Where a virtual private server or VPS is a method of hosting where multiple servers are running on a single hardware installation. This is achieved with some virtualization software that runs on top of the machines operating system. Other operating systems are then run on top of the virtualization software.
Dedicated Server
More Reliable and stable.
Whole Hardware and the resources are dedicated to you.
server run on its separate hardware installation and does not share any resource with other servers.
Upgrade not required for the long time.
VPS
Not as reliable as dedicated servers (As domains increase and Reliability may take a fall)
Sharing resources with other Customers. This service is good for hosting a more limited number of domains.
Servers on a VPS might be brought down because of a problem on another server, this doesn’t happen with dedicated servers
VPSes run based on shared hardware resources (as like shared web hosting where you also share software resources with everyone, meaning, software crashes caused by other clients will affect you). With a dedicated server all of the hardware resources are dedicated to you.
The difference between vps and dedicated is that with dedicated you are the only person with files and resources user on the server. VPS is having a virtualization environment where everyone gets root access inside a virtual machine. If you are comfortable managing your sites on a VPS as root, then it won't be problem to manage them on a dedicated server.
Virtual Private Server (VPS) hosting is an ideal solution for the users who need more power and flexibility than a shared hosting account can offer, but need a low cost alternative to a Dedicated Server.
Hosting of Dedicated server is a better variant for those, who would need reliable, performance, uptime and stable solution for large web projects or applications.

Good morning,
I have a Hyper V-VPS here which is the latest Windows implementation and it's resource hungry even for Windows, so Linux users can smile a little.
The biggest drawback to having a VPS over a dedicated server is not the inherent constraints of a virtualisation, these are fairly obvious if you read up on the subject, but the constraints imposed by the needs of a commercial host against what you want to pay as a customer and the fact that VPSs are still a relatively new technology.
In a cheap web hosting context if you have a VPS everything that you are doing is contrary to the expectations of the people writing the software that you are using.
What I mean by this is the developers of the OS and most applications that you will be using have a certain mind set, I am a developer and I have it too. That is, if you are running Windows Sever 2008 then you will obviously have a big disc, it's a server after all.
However a VPS may offer 20GB or 30GB of disc space, which at first glance appears plenty, (my first hard disc was 1MB!), as mentioned only a couple of posts back I ran out of disc space on 20GB disc despite having an almost empty site. Windows has gobbled up 11GB excluding the Swap File, a big Windows update was about 2GB and it needed working storage and there wasn't enough.
People developing for Windows server just don't expect to come up against 20GB drives any more, so will quite happily grab 5GB of disc space.
The same tends to be true for memory, if you bought a server to run Windows 2008 you would just buy 4GB of RAM as its so cheap, but a host offering say 15 VPS on a physical server would need to have 60GB of RAM in the server to be able to offer this. Servers that can take this much RAM tend to be very very expensive so the temptation is to offer 512MB, 1GB or 2GB. Again contrary to what the developers will be expecting as a typical capacity for a server.
There is also a second issue that is not related to the technology at all, if your are going for one VPS with a hosting company there is a likelihood that you will just accept certain pieces of software like a Control Panel that you have no experience of but are normally recommended by the hosting company. These apps can consume far more resources that you imagine, so a hardware configuration that makes sense in your office, fails to run once you add these extras. This is more important with a VPS as I have suggested that the hardware is already underspecified.
In summary; unless you are very careful you will probably under-specify the VPS hardware for the software that you are running and because of this you will hit problems that you simply wouldn't hit on a dedicated server because you would never buy a dedicated server of the same specifications.
Unless you are on a shoe string (like I am), the price differences between a VPS and a dedicated server has closed some much, just look at the prices here, that the VPS is bad idea.
Bye
Ian

I guess now it's time to move with a Cloud-based VPS Server hosting package. I am well aware that Hyper-V is resource hungry which i don't believe is the case with a Cloud-based VPS Hosting package.
I have heard that webhosting UK will be launching it's product soon. I think you should contact them for a test environment or similar.

Dedicated servers are offered with dedicated connection which certainly makes a difference when it comes to the upload/download speed.
When it comes to user experience with a dedicated server, you will find that dedicated servers are more reliable as the hardware is dedicated to you and they are more scalable i.e. flexible.

All the points above are correct. VPS differs from a dedicated server, mainly due to hardware consumption and connection consumption.

Dedicated Servers are indeed still the most reliable type of web hosting solutions, but Cloud servers too promises to offer better scalability and redundancy to users.Cloud is basically a cluster of multiple dedicated servers. The best thing about this new technology is that there is minimal chances of downtime.Any number of servers can be installed to the cluster.

Yeah, Cloud hosting is the future of webhosting !!! but setting up and managing cloud hosting is not a easy job. There's huge initial investment in hardware and setting up network moreover cloud management is bit hefty job but once everything is setup and is smoothly operated then you just relax and enjoy excellent hosting environment !!!

You are right Pongers ,
Cloud hosting may involve a huge cost for initial stage, however i would say that the decision of VPS, Dedicated Server, cloud hosting completely depends upon the requirements of the user, all the solutions discussed above have their own pros and cons

Well, if you are looking for maximum uptime & reliability and don't need much server resources then shared cloud hosting would be a good option as it would be much cheaper then VPS or a dedicated server provided your webhost have shared server cloud setup

VPS Server and Dedicates are the hosting platform which is dedicated to only one person with files on the server.
VPS is a virtualization environment where everyone gets root access inside a virtual machine. VPS is suitable for Medium base business.
Dedicated Server offers more security and reliability much more then VPS Hosting. If you have a high traffic website, Dedicated will be the best one.

Well, don't you think that the files on server are shared between all VPS users on the node? I think, in case of VPS, it is not Dedicated to one person.

Hello,
On vps platform, the files are not shared between all vps users. One vps user does not have access to files hosted under other vps users. All what is shared is the cpu & the hard drive space.

I agree with WHUKSam. Only hardware resources are shared between VPS hosting users on the same server node.
