Default Configuring Spam Assassin on VPS

Does anyone have tips for configuring spam assassin on a vps hosting server ? I have tried training and still more spam gets through, support are useless and told me it needs to be configured over 10-15 days!!!!
Swsoft logged in and lowered hit to 3 and set spam to be marked ****SPAM**** and yes it picks some up but not all & with hits at 3 it should get all.

Hi Garry,

You have Mail Enable Standard version installed on your VPS server, which is provided as an addon [free] with the Plesk control panel. This standard version of Mail Enable provides less features than what are included in the Professional & Enterprise ones, such as Spam filtering, Bayesian filtering, IMAP, etc etc. If you need further SPAM filtering features available, upgrade the mail server to the next level [both professional & enterprise have a trial period of 60 days] to check the benefits of their filtering methods.

As for now, DNS blacklisting wasn't configured on your VPS, which I've done now. This will cause a major crackdown on the incoming spam as it'd be scanned by the mail server against the DNS blacklisting servers such as DNSBL, SPAMCOP, SPAMHAUS, etc. Spam training needs a particular amount of time to build up it's database to start recognizing spam. Do get back if you notice any change in the incoming spam volumes after these changes or need assistance with upgrading the mail server.

Thanks for the reply and update, Our web hosting account (VPS server) was originally ordered and setup but there was no spam filtering installed and it took several days to get someone to install it. I also had a few other issues where the server wasnt working correctly because of miss configured items when the account was setup for us. Would it be possible for someone to check the sever installation over to ensure that is all correct?

As for mailenable pro or enterprise I am currently looking at upgrading for mailbox sent messages and folder creation options. Is it only available from mailenable site? is seems pricey!

Thumbs up Hello

Hello Garry,

Actually, we had forwarded your issue to swsoft engineers and they have already done required settings, their reply is as follows :

====
Action was set to delete spam mail for mailbox bfitzgerald@marb******.co.uk. I set to mark as spam instead for testing purposes.
I sent a test spam Message (see KB Parallels: [How To] How to test Spamassassin) and it was marked as spam. Also another message has been delivered which was also marked as spam.

Please check it.

Feel free to contact us if you need further assistance with this issue.
====

You can find Mailenable pro or enterprise license details on their website. We will definitely help you to upgrade Mailenable.

Seb

hi thanks for the update but i have had some problems now with a black listed IP i think i have resloved it and just waiting for the update to take place.
However i see you still using the DSBL.org | DSBL for DNS blacklisting this service has been down for sometime (about a year now) and probably best to remove it.

Thumbs up Hello

Hello,

Actually, DSBL.org | DSBL comes with Mailenable by default. If you wish, we can change it to SPAMCOP or SPAMHAUS or any other blacklisting company.

Please get back to us if you would like to do these changes.

Hi I know it comes with mailenable but you have only just switched on my DNS Blacklisting (few months late) and enabled something which is no longer in use.
You have also already switched on SPAMCOP & SPAMHAUS on my account and now testing to ensure all is working properly.
Thanks for all your help

You're welcome Garry Yep, I'd switched on DNS blacklisting for all the blacklisting server, including SpamHaus & SpamCop. Few others can be added as well, just in case you need them.
I hope there'd definitely be a crackdown on the spam now.. Do keep us updated with the results of your testing...
