Question Wish to uninstall some pre-installed stuff

Hi, everybody!

This is my first post and I'll start it by asking for advice. The reason why I've decided to ask here rather than via support ticket is because this is not a complain, neither a bug report. Moreover, I'd like to read from other users on this subject.

Well, I've just managed to get my fresh Windows VPS running as desired. Not at a glance, but I'm in and my site up and running again - far from EasyCGI.

It happens that there's no much RAM for playing with and, on the other hand, there's too much applications installed on my server. Most of them are useless for my needs, so I thought maybe I could get rid of some of them.

UNDESIRED APPS:

  1. .NET 1.0
  2. .NET 1.1
  3. .NET 2.0
  4. .NET 3.0
  5. MSXML Parser 6.0
  6. ASP .NET
  7. FrontPage
  8. ActivePerl
  9. MySQL Server 4
  10. MySQL Server 5

QUESTIONS:

  1. May I simply uninstall them via RDP or there's a correct ways of doing it without making Plesk (I hate it) cry and hang?

  2. Would Windows ask me to reboot in order to complete a given uninstallation process? If so, how could I access the server via RDP in case Windows, once rebooted, promped user with a dialog box?

  3. Would Windows end up asking me for the Installation CD or I can feel secure and send them all to the limbo?

  4. If I do a system backup (from Virtuozo) prior to the uninstallation adventure, I will be safe in case of need to fully restore it?

  5. Do the support staff perform this kind of task upon request?

  6. Is there any (up-to-date) tutorial or FAQ explainning all this in detail?

Well, I believe I'm abusing enough for my first time. Hope nobody won't mind.
P.S. I'm from Brazil, so forgive me for my english "tupiniquim".

Hello Cãofusão,

1) I can see plesk installed on your windows vps. Asp.net and XML parser is required for plesk control panel. Please do not remove it from VPS.

2) If you want, you can remove other applications from Add/Remove programs (from plesk setup), which is the proper way. Instead of that you can just
Disable other programs which you do not want to use currently. In case in future if required, you can enable them and use it.

3) Windows will not ask for reboot after un-installation process but it is recommended to reboot windows box after un-installation of application from it.
You can reboot windows vps either from RDP itself or using Virtuozzo control panel. https://ipaddress:4643/

4) Windows will not ask you for installation CD.

5) It is always safe to have full backup created from Virtuozzo control panel, before doing of any changes on vps which you are not sure.

6) You can open a ticket or email to our VPS support department at any time, to perform this kind of task.

7) Currently we do not have any tutorial or FAQ. But you can refer to windows vps tuning at Windows VPS tunning.....

Thumbs up

Well, If ASP NET is required, then NET also is, but which version of NET? I have 2 versions installed: 2.0 and 3.0 . The ASP NET used by Plesk must be using 1 of the 2, not both.

I have disabled some components from Plesk as you suggested, but it seems not to make any impact to the VPS itself. I thought some Windows Services would be disabled.

I'm gonna open a support ticket and let a tech guy do what is possible.
Anyways, I've just made a full backup from Virtuozo.

Thanks, Michael, for responding.

P.S. The board has forced me to remove all leading dots in "NET" because it was being interpreted as a URL and I received the error: "You can only post URLs after reaching 5 posts".
