Default email mail server

i have set up some email addresess for a client through cpanel. I have then configured my outlook with the provided mail server names etc and i can send and receive emails fine.

My client has set up his outlook like mine but cannot send emails. His isp is AOL and i have read that AOL block outgoing emails that are not from AOL email acccounts. Does anybody have any information on this? Ive read that you can change the SMTP port to avoid the problem, if i do this, what port should i use?

Thanks

aargh AOL!

I know you will have problems sending emails to AOL clients, due to the requirement for an rdns setting. You need to get an rDNS setup via support.

I've not heard of them blocking you using another account to send, but then this is AOL we are talking about.

AOL needs a specific port opened on our server which is hosting your account. You will need to request our support team to open port 587 in the firewall on server and allow exim to run on port 587 in addition to port 25.

You can then modify port settings in your outlook and use port 587 instead of port 25.

Just switched from BT, and I'm already having network issues with WHUK servers.

I would never say this, but I wish i was still with AOL.

I noticed that Tiscali and Orange had similar issues Dan..Quite worrying really.

Bit off topic, but with regards to AOL,
Has anyone got any info on a couple of returned mailing list emails with the error:

Quote:
host mailin-03.mx.aol.com : 550 We would love to have
gotten this email to ******@aim.com. But, your recipient never logged
onto their free AIM Mail account. Please contact them and let them know that
they're missing out on all the super features offered by AIM Mail. And by
the way, they're also missing out on your email. Thanks.
Not sure what aim is, but actually the email address it was sent to was aol not aim.
Although i can guess they are one of the same.
I have probably 5 of these returns out of around 50 i send to aol users without any problems. Not sure whether to delete them from my database or not. No big issue really, just curious

It means they have setup an AOL account and then not logged into it for months, so AOL have put it in a dormant state. If you run a forum or something, treat it as recipient no longer known at this address.

Thx for that.. so there is a possibility they may still use it again in the future!
It isn't a forum but a newsletter mailing list I have created. I think I will leave them in there for the time being in that case.

Thanks for this advice. I contacted support and they told me to use port 26 and my client is still having trouble. You mention opening a port on the firewall to allow exim to run. Im a bit concerned that just changing to port 26 from my end isn't going to be enough. Should i try support again? thanks

Please ask them to open port 587 instead of 26 and give them URL of this thread. AOL won't allow you to send emails unless you use port 587 for SMTP.
